Default website domain name expired- can I do it myself now?

Last year I had a web designer, a friend, doing a website for me. I let it expire after my contract was up, after a few discouraging breeding setbacks. I am considering starting it up again but would prefer to maintain it myself. The domain name was owned by my web designer but it is a very location specific name so it is a safe bet the name is still available. How do I go about picking up the name and doing it myself? Any hints on doing a website yourself? She used Go Daddy, if that makes any difference.

I will not use GoDaddy as I find their advertising offensive. I use Network Solutions and am happy with them. My website doesn't get rave reviews, but it's okay.

I would think, just guessing, that if you use any part of what your designer did for you, you would need to pay her. If you just pay for the domain and do everything from scratch, you should be okay. But I'm not an expert!

Closing this, since it's not horse-related.
