So, my filly is going off on her vacation soon, and while I have a mini, he is a bit of a toot. Which, leaves my kids without a pony to ride. I found this guy though:

He is dirt cheap, 11.2 hh. 7 years old, and says he is a Shetland. He is cheap because he has sat in a pasture for a while, and is only a lead line pony.

So, would you go for it?

How big of a kid can ride a 11.2 hh pony?

Oh he's CUTE!! I haven't done smaller ponies in years, so I don't know how big a kid could sit on him. He doesn't look like a Shetland to me though??

I'd surely go for it, assuming his temperament is good / he's safe for your kids to be around on the ground. Check his teeth--looks like maybe a parrot mouth? Not that it's a big deal, especially since he clearly is keeping in good weight.

Based on the one photo I would guess little to no Shetland, maybe Welsh or Connemara in the wood pile.

Ponies being innately evil , I suppose I would ask myself has he 'only' been a leadline pony because he is 'playful' when a kid attempts to ride him independently?

But then, if dirt cheap, I'd be inclined to take a chance. A kid's life isn't complete unless they are tortured a bit by a pony.

Aren't there two types of shetlands? The furry round english type and the American TB type? He could just be a generic pony but he's very cute.

My son is 8, is probably 4' 6" tall, and weighs about 70 pounds. He rode an 11 hand pony this summer, but if he keeps growing like a weed, I'm guessing he'll need to bump up to a bigger mount next summer.

I'm not a kid, but at 5' 1" I was quite comfortable for years on my 12.3 hand Welsh pony. I think 11.2 is a great size!

Omg cute! He looks bigger than 11.2 to me, but then again it is hard to tell in a picture. As long as he has a sturdy build I don't see a problem with him carrying up to 100 pounds, assuming the rider is well balanced and has a nice light seat.

He definitely doesn't look like a sh!tland to me, more like a generic pony cross or maybe a tb or QH welsh cross? But I just don't see Shetland in there.

I would take a chance on him, he looks like he could be very fancy.

My friend is going to check on him tomorrow. I can deal with spooky, just not herd bound, spooky, unsound, or quick. My little girl has already had her heart broken by losing her Daddy, so I want to make sure he's a good fit for her sake.

LOL - I'm not sure, but after finding him on equinenow.com for $1500 - the ad on CL has him for $300, I passed on him - way too many weird things going on there.
