Default Scaly skin on back of pasterns.

    Hi All,

I noticed yesterday that my horse has slightly scaly, flaky skin on the back of his front pasterns. No bleeding, oozing, pussing, etc. Each flake is dry and about the size of a thumb-tack (or smaller).

His stall is currently dry with shavings, but we did recently come out of a few days or rain/mud (fairly unusual in our area).

I was thinking of scrubbing with bacterial soap and treating with a topical steroid or general ointment (have both in my kit) before calling the vet. Any thoughts or advice? Anyone else had this issue?

To me it sounds like it could be scratches. I saw a horse that had them and I'm almost positive that's a pretty accurate description of it. I'm not sure how to more-so cure it, but what I've heard is that it's awfully common and a few scrubs and treatments should have it cured soon. Scratches would be my first thought to research though.

I would gently clean it with a jelly scrubber or rough towel and keep an eye on it. I would not disturb the skin's protective coat of oil and good bacteria with antibacterial soap.

Scratches/mud fever. Current thread about it here:
