Default Happy Mouth and Nathe bits legal in lower levels?

I've been out of the loop for a while - are both Happy Mouth and Nathe bits legal in lower levels?

Well, it depends on the type of Happy Mouth bit. For example, this type of Happy Mouth mullen mouth is NOT legal: http://img.smartpak.com/product/452700.jpg

This Happy Mouth IS legal: http://img.smartpak.com/product/300x...sering_pla.jpg

Nathe bits, as ThreeFigs said, are also legal. I emailed USEF about using the first bit at a show last year and they told me that I needed the smooth bit rather than the one with bumps. Just wanted to throw that out there because I wouldn't want anyone else making that mistake!

I did not know the bumpy ones were illegal!

    BTW, Ham is beautiful!

Yeah, I didn't know either! I don't quite understand why they are, but I'll just go with it. I'm not exclusively riding dressage (we're working on jumping, too), so I still use mine for schooling and save my Nathe for dressage shows.

Thank you so much for the compliment on Ham! He's definitely a character and lives up to his name. I can't wait to get him out showing this year!

the USEF rule book is very well written and very clear ( with illustrations) on what makes a bit illegal

the bumps = lack of smoothness

The Dressage section of the rulebook is as good a Dressage 101 you are going to see.
