I only ship saddles by FedEx ground and insure them. Just shipped a saddle with them last week and it couldn't have been more pleasant.

I had a new saddle shipped from Europe, and another saddle shipped from a neighboring state after it was reflocked. The latter was shipped UPS. Neither was packaged that carefully, and both arrived in perfect condition. Saddles are shipped all the time Because this is COTH, you'll get a dozen different opinions, but I have to say I get items from UPS almost weekly and have never had a problem with them. I would definitely insure it though. There are a couple of old threads on this:

I just received a saddle via USPS. It was insured and shipped with packing peanuts and a pillow to protect the pommel, which hit the bottom of the box. It took 3 days to get here (Central NC) from Baltimore, Maryland for $30. I was very impressed.

I just received one of my saddles from Beval to try and it was shipped by UPS, The box was a little banged up on one end, I don't know if it started that way, but it's got tape holding it together so someone tried to fix it! Saddle is ok though!
