So DH and I were at the New Years Horse Auction to buy TACK...not horses. We needed another horse like a hole in the head. BUT, this cute little grey gelding came in and really caught my eye. He's 10yo and about 15.0H. I asked if I could ride him and he cow-kicked me when I got on (first bonus point!). He had such a smooth trot and canter (second bonus point!), and was not cleaned up at all so he didn't look very pretty (third bonus point!). What made me buy him is when he was lined up getting to go into the ring, these kids were running around like little brats. He raised his leg, but didn't actually kick out. I hate kids too (except my own!), so I KNEW he would be my perfect horse. After the auction, I rode him around bareback in a halter and lead-rope. He was used as a camp horse and is just burned out. DH bought my a QH for my Birthday this past Sept, but I really want to hunt and I don't think the old girl will keep up in the field. This guy has a good go and a good whoa, so we shall see.

My retired gelding is a major a hole too. Loves to pin his ears and pick up his back legs. I even had him scoped...vet said, no ulcers....just a grumpy ol man.

Can't see the pics, but thank you for having the "bad taste" in horses to buy the auction one that tried to kick you.

It warms my heart to know that an animal who had been screwed over enough by our species to become grumpy-out-of-the-box can find someone who will treat him well in the end.

What is it with grey geldings and attitude? Mine isn't grumpy (loves people, animals, kids, etc.) although he probably would be if he were a school horse. But he can be a royal A** (mischievous, opinionated and full of himself as far as other horses are concerned). He's also a huge pocket pony.

I bet once he figures out that he's now a one person horse, and won't have a bunch of different riders he'll settle in nicely. He looks wonderful, and has such a kind eye.

hahahaha must be a theme. I ride a gray gelding who fits that description perfectly. But as soon as you scratch his head you are his friend for life.
