I was having a lesson at Hunterdon with him back in 94, on my very hot usually quite brave chestnut tb mare. We were jumping a wall with a ditch on one side, and going wall in front of ditch, no problem. However, coming back the other way, she saw the ditch in front of the wall and said "heck no! are you crazy, I am not going near that thing". So, I tapped her with the stick on the subsequent approach and she said "ok, but we arent coming within 20 feet of it!" So she launched from a whole stride sooner than I saw, and I let out an involuntary scream, and so did Nona Garson (my boss at the time)...and GHM said "Girls, girls, you blonds, birds of a feather flock together!"
Always remember that "perfection" is the mortal enemy of "excellence."

To a friend of mine who was riding a super-green horse in his clinic (as in one who had never even seen a 3 ft. fence before and was lauching herself like a jackrabbit over them) : "was that horse a gift?"

I did a clinic with him this past fall, and despite having nightmares about how it was going to go, actually enjoyed myself.
Loved the "Come he-yah!, now CAN-TAH!"
In the post clinic analysis, he told one girl "Don't practise eating!"
Me- he looked at me, told me "You are kind of old (I'm 53), and not built to ride (5'6 with short chunky kind of thighs), but a good student and I could do things with you, because you want it!"
Not terribly PC but something I will treasure!
I had a lot of "ahem" older folks come up to me afterwards and even come find me in the barn to tell me what a good job I'd done.
I was happy to have survived.
