    Question Foaling Short Course?

I would like to attend a 'foaling short course' in the coming months. The only one in the US that I have been able to locate is held by Colorado State, in Weatherford, TX, in January: CSU Foaling Course

This looks great, but the flights may be cost prohibitive, particularly for a one-day event.

My other searches have located many courses about reproductive management, but nothing regarding actual foaling.

Might anyone have suggestions? Thank you!

Quite a few years ago the vet student group at UC Davis put one on as a fund raiser. It is one of the best things I have ever attended, was full, and I got course notes I review every year. It was a one day course, relatively inexpensive, and probably not widely advertised. I keep hoping that they will do it again. I suggest you check with your nearest veterinary schools, and see if they are offering such a course.

I would talk with your vet and he/she may know a larger barn in your area who foals out and can help you-hands on. Even before I started my breeding program 10+ years ago, I had never foaled out a foal until my first arrived. It's reasonable common sense. If you were closer I'd invite you up here to NYS.

Our vet school hospital offers "Tuesday Talks" which are 2 hour lectures for horse owners. They had an excellent talk on Foaling. If you check the Equine Medical Center, Morven Park, website there may be a video. Ask your vet school to offer a similar couple of community lectures on Foaling. The EMC lectures are free, but most of us give an annual donation to support the talks and the hospital.
