Default Missing my dog recently laid to rest

Anyone else missing their 4 legged critters. My girl came into my life on December 26th, 1996. She was laid to rest on Dec. 27th, 2012. 16 years and one day. It is truly amazing how much space in your home and your heart a 23 lb. animal can occupy. I know I was fortunate to have more years with her than most people but I miss her so much. It wasn't long enough.

One More Day with Riley (1996-2012)

If I could have just one more day
To tell you that I love you,
To hold you close and rub your nose,
And show you how much I care.

Another day to be with you,
    to play your favorite games,
To see you wag your tail just one more time,
    Because I said your name.

One more day I could come home,
And know that you'd be here,
To snuggle with you one more time,
    And whisper in your ear.

We use to journey side by side,
With a twinkle in our eyes,
    Two friends sharing moments,
    Living life without a care.

Before we knew it, the moments passed,
    And you're no longer here,
Like money spent, time ran out,
Gone are the days without a spare.

I told you that I loved you and held you in my arms.
You passed on quietly and peacefully,
To join God on the farm.

I see you in my dreams my love,
You're happy and I'm not there,
We always think we'll have more time,
To love what we hold dear.

You have a place now in my heart,
    Until we meet again,
But I'll still wish for one more day,
To love you well my friend.

((hugs)) I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. The poem is beautiful. It reminded me of my beloved Lab Chessie who went to the rainbow bridge Nov 29. Yes, it hurts not to have them here. Your Riley deserves to be remembered, so think of her often.

yankee - I understand the gap, and no the time is never long enough. I had to put down the younger of my two dogs just two weeks ago - he was only 7, and the whole situation was devastating to me. Started looking around for another in need of a home thinking it would take a while. But we were lucky and found a sweet young dog who had been pulled from local animal control. He is now here and keeping us busy with the settling in process. Though I still see my prior boy at many moments during the day, the house has become a little brighter w/ the new addition.

    Hugs to you.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. She was such a great companion and with me for so long.

She accompanied me on trail rides. 23 lbs with a heart of gold and she loved to run. An English cocker. She would gallop down the trails like a black hairy muff. Ears flopping up and down. Legs pumping together, out, together out.

Hugs to you, YC. I also miss my sweet little Ariel, all 12 lbs of big attitude. Like your dog, mine also loved going on trail rides, right up until this spring when she turned 16. We put her to sleep yesterday and already miss her dearly. Had her every day of her life, from birth until 16 yrs and 8 months.

Here she is on a trail ride:

I'm so sorry. I have a friend mourning her 15-year-old cat who died a month ago, and as we talk about losing pets, I keep breaking down remembering my dogs. You never forget them.

Thank you. They really do leave a big hole. I'm happy that she is no longer trapped in her arthritic, aged body. She can be forever young in my mind and heart. In time, I hope to get another sweet black girl with a similar disposition and heart.

This is a beautiful poem which brings tears to many of us, the sentiments are so true. So very sorry for the loss of your beloved Riley. They are never with us long enough, are they? Just finished writing two cards to people who lost dogs recently. My cousins lost their 16 year old beagle just before Christmas and are heartbroken. Friends lost their 15 year old Standard Poodle on Dec. 27 after a long decline and their other dogs are still searching for her. It is never easy to lose a treasured member of the family, is it? Sounds as though Riley had a very special life with you, accompanying you on trail rides and living life to the fullest. Bless You.

I lost my Gemma 2 1/2 years ago and I still cry when I think of her. She was my first dog (I was late to dog-ownership) and such a gift. I love horses and cats but a dog is like no other companion. Won't be able to have another for awhile so I torture myself searching Petfinder and find many that look like her.
