So seriously Lex, do I just go somewhere online to get a cleanup or do I need to take it somewhere, or, if properly instructed, can I do it myself?

Well, the first thing you do is backup all your files and internet favorites/bookmarks to a flash drive. From there, it depends on the make and model of your netbook. Assuming it already has an SSD like many other netbooks, you would simply run the factory restore process, update/install all the software, and then copy all your personal files and import your internet bookmarks. But one thing you should do - if at all possible - is to upgrade the memory. That may or may not be possible with your model and there may be complications in doing it. I couldn't tell you without knowing what you have.

Ah yes. Well, the specs on that thing are not too great. It's using older RAM and a regular HDD. The cost of upgrading both of those to what I suggested is not practical given the age of the netbook and the quality of performance you could reap from it, though you certainly could do it. You would need a single 4GB DDR2 SODIMM and a 2.5-inch SSD of your choice. Crucial makes inexpensive and good SSDs, which you can buy online. Their M4 series is what many people buy. The RAM you can also get online as DDR2 is not standard anymore and is hard to find in retail shelves. I would recommend waiting and then simply replacing it with something else coming out soon but the quickest and cheapest upgrade you can do easily is to simply upgrade the RAM. That might cost you $40 or so. All you have to do is remove the one that is in there and replace it. It's that simple.
