Cayleigh, you won't find that Parelli is respected by 99% of the regulars here at COTH. You will need to take your silly string and your pricey hog stick somewhere else. You would be wasting your time here. Unless of course you want to merge Parelli with Western Dressage, in which case ...
I so far really like Parelli. I have seen improvments in both of my horses with just two sessions. People say he abuses horse, well he is not going to be fiscally training my horses, I am and I'm not going to hit my horses. People say he says people dont need to where a helmet, well that's where common sense kicks in. Besides lots of people don't think you need to wear one. As for the prices, look at Clinton Anderson and most big trainers. People at my barn use Parelli and there horses are amazing. Some people think Natural Horsemanship is dumb because you have to force your horse to do things and they think you have to show your horse who's boss. Natural Horsemanship takes what they naturally do in the wild and had you do it so the horse understands you better. People say he trains horse to e his equal, which is not true. He is the leader but he does it in a friendly, more natural way be doesn't go straight to forcing a horse to do something he does it in the same order horses do naturally. Suggest, ask, tell, promise.
where has 7 been?
I have not seen him in a long time!
Ok, in the christmas spirit, before the Christmas spirits set in:
Maybe there are useful things in the program, I honestly don't know.
And I am so not going there.
But what I think is a neat program to work a horse 'outside the box' is Linda Tellington-Jones' TEAM/TTOUCH.
I have dappled with it, back in the late 80s/early 90s. and while I did not even scratch the surface, I saw some dramatic positive results.
A lot less hype and snake oil, but plenty of voodoo.
good question! Where is 7?? The last/only time I started a Parelli thread, 7 about had apoplexy ANND accused me of being a shit stirring nube. I guess the fact that I have been here since 04 kinda escaped 7, but oh well....
I am not trying to start anything. I didn't realis until after I posted this that people here have a problem with Parelli. You Didn't have to open the feed if you don't like Parelli. And just because he is showing me what to do does not mean I will start hitting horses. Besides he doesn't do anything violent in his video. If his horse gets nervous he walks him around until he's calm which doesn't take long.
Would these people at your barn with these awesome horses be the same ones that told you that your horses don't need their teeth floated until they are "older" and don't properly feed your choke prone horse??
Look if you want to use Parelli to learn some basics go for it but you are young and need a educated professional to work with you live to help you become a great horsemen.
Natural Horsemanship takes what they naturally do in the wild
Horses self-longe into trailers in the wild? Good lord, how'd I miss that?
NH has become something that PP has coined as his own thing, but it's not his. There are fabulous horsemen/women that are doing really good work without trademarking any terms. In my experience a good trainer doesn't need a gadget to feel a horse and work with or train them.
You've compared PP to the cost of Clinton Anderson twice in this post. It's a really big world of 'natural' trainers and you have many options. It's not about the cost, but it is all about the path to the results.
Kathleen Lindley wrote a really good book called In The Company of Horses. Her book was my first step toward a totally different view on training. Good luck with your journey, it's a long one for all of us.
You Didn't have to open the feed if you don't like Parelli.
Well, it is entirely not fair to start a thread with the word "Parelli" in it and expect only those who like them to show up!
The weather outside is frightful
the reading inside is delightful
let it chug
let it chug
let it chug
The weather really is gross here. It can't even snow! All we have is yucky sleet. There should be some redeeming feature to the weekend. Even if it is only an entertaining thread or two. Maybe the mods would merge the western dressage thread with this one?
