OP- here are my thoughts. If you can learn a technique or 2 from Parelli, Chris Cox, the man on the moon, that helps you and your horse (without breaking the $$ bank), go for it.(and I am the first to scoff at "Parelli", due to the whole commercialism they have created and some things are just damned ridiculous).

"Natural" horsemanship has really been given a bad rap by people who are out to exploit those seeking help. I remember when "natural" referred to "He/She is a natural with horses", when it meant people, intuitively, knew how to read horses body language and engage them in desired behaviors (and not dancing around an indoor waving a whip).

Don't spend tons of money. If you can hook up with some trainers, go for it. Maybe even an old mare like myself, who would love some barn help. They are everywhere. They can help you with some tricks and tips. Maybe some are Parelli-like, some not.

My point is, you don't have to spend a fortune, and try not to get caught up in a line of BS. I think you can learn something from everyone with whom you come into contact.

You should see him attempt to cut cattle. I have seen him multiple times and most shows he comes close to falling off! His horses have absolutely no idea what they are doing and it shows, but he is claiming to be an expert cutting horse trainer now. Cutting is one place where you have to be real partners and know and trust your horse, and vice versa. Not a place you can fake it, and believe me he shows his true colors there. You ought to see the idiot saddle he rides in. I've taken to videoing some of his rides and when he finally hits the dirt (he has had to grab leather multiple times), I am posting it on youtube.

I highly recommend you get some real help from a real trainer before you or your dad (or your horses) get hurt. JMHO.

I had to go back and comment on this. I saw a Parelli show on RFDtv. Pat was going to show us all how to cut cattle. He never did get a steer separated and the show turned into something else all together.

I also saw a video that featured a student of Linda's longeing her horse while waiting for LP to come and ride with her. The horse suddenly kicked out and got the girl on the hand. You could tell she was shaken but had no idea how to react (sorry, but any horse of mine who raised a hoof in my direction would soon learn that it was unacceptable). She mentioned it to Linda when she showed up and Linda shrugged and told her something to the effect "stay out of the way". I wish I could find it.

Merry Christmas from the warmbloods! We don't bash parelli because we don't know much about training programs. With any training program, it's always do this, do that, jump this, piaffe, etc. Never "innovate," "be creative," "buck after clearing jump" or "spook." All those training programs stifle our creativity.

We use Parelli's techniques and have had great success with our horses.

OP, your best option would probably be to find a trainer near you to come out and work with youAND your horse.
Every horse is different, and while bits and pieces can be taken from SOME 'training systems' you would be far better off with a hands on trainer teaching both of you.
Also, a good trainer that can come to you can see and address other issues, what you feed, what kind of turnout situation, how you currently work with your horse, confidence, knowledge, etc. etc. and find what works for your situation.

When a "wild animal" gets "ahold" of her horse's fly mask, well........and no one buys a fly mask in December (unless there's a major sale somewhere) unless she lives in Florida or the western desert.

We've never seen a raccoon or fox walking around the pasture with one of our fly masks we've rubbed off.

We've never seen a raccoon or fox walking around the pasture with one of our fly masks we've rubbed off.

That happened at the end of summer, and I don't know what else could have done it, the marks went like marks from rubbing it off or another horse pulling it and it wasnt the barn dog. And I bought a flymask in December to protect him eyes from the sun because he can get eye problems. I just posted a questions..... didn't know that made me a troll......
