Question Determining age for young hunter class

A friend suggested I enter my horse in the young hunters next summer at Upperville, but it is only open to 3 and 4 year olds. My horse will turn 5 about a month before the show. Would it be correct to say it is the horse's age at the time of the show (5) vice age at the start of the show season (4)?

Regardless of when the horse was born, whatever year they were born, they are that age as of Jan. first.

So this is why many show breeders try to breed their mares earlier in the year
