Default The End of the Mayan Calendar

The last day of the Mayan calendar is this coming Friday.

So, who thinks it will be the end of the world, and at this point, does anyone even care?

Personally, I think they just got tired of projecting the dates into the future. Afterall, their calendar outlasted 'em by almost 2000 years as it was.

The calendar actually just loops back and starts its cycle over. So maybe we will just hit a cosmic reset button?

(No, I don't actually think it has anything to do with anything, any more than Y2K would.)

2 weeks ago I went to UPenn's Anthropology museum's Mayan exhibit. They pointed out that Mayan calendars actually do go far beyond 12/21/12. Some of them include dates up around our Year 3500.

I also learned that there are still Mayans today, even though many people think there aren't - the Mayan people number around 7 million. And that around the time of the Spanish invasion they had books, too. Bark books, so paper books. I saw one at the museum.

Sounds like a great reason to visit an authentic restaurant and have some questionably-authentic margaritas....

I will be eagerly waiting and seeing how the world ends, lol. As whoever said, Peter Pan? - that would be a heck of an adventure. At least I got one of my bucket lists out of way earlier this year: a 10 days Safari trip in Africa on horseback, getting up close and personal with big Fives. yay.

My husband goes out for beer and wings with a small group every third Thursday of the month. This week they are calling it "Barmaggedon". They are going out with a bang.

It's interesting that it seems the media coverage and related TV programming seems to be decreasing. I know I've seen some stuff, but we were being bombarded with it last winter.

The whole Mayan calendar phenomenon came about from Terrenc McKenna. He was a new age mathematician who created a algorhythmic chart based on the I-ching, using when the i-ching was invented (granted loose with the dates) and the chart dropped off coincidentally on December 21, 2012. Because that date was associated with the Mayan calendar it became a theory that the drop off of the date chart McKenna created meant "the end" seeing as it supposedly matched up with other historical events. The problem with the whole thing is McKenna is dead, and his research was burned up in a fire. The television show "Unsolved Mysteries" did a segment on McKenna in the early 90's and this is where this whole "Mayan Madness" started.

I found it interesting that the owner of Perfect World, a video game, took the subscription requirement out of his game this last week since he believes the world is going to end on Friday. I wonder how his investors took the news...

Do I think the world will end on Friday? Nope

Am I going to an End of the World party? Yes. Any excuse for a party lol

There have been so many end of the world predictions that never came true. I don't think they hold much weight. I only heard of the Mayan Calendar after watching that movie (I can't remember the name off the top of my head)

Well, I didn't get Raptured in May, so I'm pretty confident that I'll be just fine come Saturday morning.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I've also heard that the Mayan calendar is cyclic and Friday is just the end of a cycle which will start over again on Saturday.

No I don't think the world will end this Friday. It will get way worse before that happens.

My calendar is ending this month too. It was really cute and full of pictures of cattle dogs. When it restarts it will be full of pigs.

My mom pointed out that what with the end of the world coming, we have been worrying waaaaaaaay too much about the fiscal cliff.

Sigh. Yet ANOTHER "end-of-the-world" moronic episode? I'll pass, thank you. Although I do feel heartily sorry for the folks who really believe in this stuff. It must be oh so disappointing when it doesn't happen. How do they manage to go on with their lives until the next "end-of-the-world" moronic episode?
