    Default Rita Mae Brown

I got tired of hearing "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." attributed to Albert Einstein and looked up the facts on this today. It was actually said by foxhunting author Rita Mae Brown in her 1983 book "Sudden Death"!

I've also read it attributed to NA literature printed prior to Ms. Brown's book.

Where did you find definitive information that this well-known quote is actually from Rita Mae Brown? It's been attributed to Einstein for decades - long before Rita Mae penned her foxhunting books.

Actually, I never heard it attributed to Einstein before 2000 or so and it's so STUPID I could never believe he would say it.

I read a biography of Einstein, and it wasn't in there. I was a Physics major in college in the '60s and never heard of this quote.

Please show me a quote from decades ago of Einstein saying this.

I am guessing "NA" stands for New Age?

    I found this:

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

    - Falsely attributed to Sigmund Freud. Has also been incorrectly attributed to Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein and Mark Twain. According to Wikiquote, the earliest known occurrence of this statement is in a mystery novel, Sudden Death, by Rita Mae Brown (Bantam, 1983).

    Misattributed

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.
Brown did include this quote in her book Sudden Death (Bantam Books, New York, 1983), p. 68, but it appears she was just paraphrasing a quote that had already been written elsewhere. The earliest known appearance of a similar quote is the "approval version" of the Narcotics Anonymous "Basic Text" released in November 1981, which included the quote "Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results." A pdf scan of the 1981 approval version can be found here, with the quote appearing on p. 11 (p. 25 of the pdf), at the end of the fourth paragraph (which begins "We have a disease; progressive, incurable and fatal").

    This is from Wikiquotes.

Ah! Very good! I found this in their 1981 handbook:

Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results.

Here's a slightly different & somewhat more erudite version of the quote, which is the one I was thinking of. Unfortunately, I can't find the date/source for it at the moment, but do recall it being long before the 1980's.

“There is nothing that is a more certain sign of insanity than to do the same thing over and over and expect the results to be different.”

    –Albert Einstein

If the world made sense, MEN would ride aside.

Actually, that quote IS attributed to Ms. Brown. It goes:

"If the world were a logical place, men would ride side saddle."

Thanks. Good to know I've been attributing my sort-a quote to the right source.
