Because then the days start getting longer! I hate that I can't ride after work, and have to slog about in the mucky dark doing my morning barn chores. I swear I was a brown bear in my previous life since I am completely unmotivated to ride or do anything this time of the year!

I feed about six a.m. Eastern Standard Time (with headlamp) and this morning it was only just starting to become daylight when I finished. The best thing about this time of year is the stars in the sky in the morning.

At least here in MA, the day that the sun sets the earliest is tomorrow, Dec. 12th, at 4:11.

After that, the sunset gets later. By the 21st, it's setting at almost 4:30. However, the Sunrise continues to get later after tomorrow, FASTER than sunset is getting later. Hence the shorter day.

I feed in the dark (head lamp like maunder) before work. I feed in the dark again at night (with the headlamp). I HATE it! Each horse has to stand while I inspect each one using a stinkin flashlight to make sure everyone is well, no injuries, cuts etc.

Yes, I will be doing the happy dance when I still have a little bit of daylight after work.

OMG are the stars just amazing or what??? That is the only winter perk for me...I HATE (there is no font large enough to express it) cold weather & winter in general, BUT I feel sorry for those folks who sleep through the beautiful winter 0-dark-thirty mornings. some mornings I actually just stand quietly staring at the sky.

That said....I do propose that we all celebrate Winter Solstice by hiring someone to do the critter chores and hole up in some equatorial town until about March (or later if you have a mud season) where we can lie about in the sun - or shade - drinking frozen-ish beverages.

I saw the same moon in Missouri when walking the dog this morning. Slight sliver of lighted moon with the 'dark' moon visible against the sky and the bright planet in the middle. Like a postcard. Very, very cool.

4:32pm sunset today, 4:32 sunset tomorrow, and then a 4:33pm sunset on the 13th! Cause for celebration in my book! Will try to pay more attention to the moon when I go out to feed tomorrow morning.
