Okay so I'm hoping my description will be sufficient enough for someone to point me in the right direction.

I saw this gorgeous dog a couple days ago and it's been bothering me that I didn't have the chance to ask the owner what the breed was. The dog was a bit taller than a golden retriever, and STOUT. He was a stocky guy. He had off white, kind of cream colored fur. It was sort of fluffy. (Think like a Shiba Inu, except a little bit longer.) He had a curled tail. And his face did not have a long, pointed nose. It was kind of flatter, but not as flat as a Pug either.

I hope someone can help me out. He was just so pretty and I've been wondering what he was! If anyone knows, you can attach a link to a picture because I'd be able to tell if it was the same kind that I saw or not.

Akita sounds about right though there are several Spitz breeds that have similar appearances and it's not uncommon to find mutts whose lineage consists of one or more of those combined.

Think it might have been an Akita? Cream isn't the most common color in the breed, but it's not unheard of either.

Is it possible he wasn't a purebred? Maybe you could go to the AKC site and look at the thumbnails of their recognized breeds and then report back if you see a match? Or the UKC site, since they might have a wider range of recognized breeds.

I can't think of a breed off the top of my head that fits your description. I was thinking Akita, too, but the flatter face is throwing me. The Bullmastiff doesn't have a fluffy coat, but does have a flatter face.

neither of which is recommended for the inexperienced or non-breed-savvy
Though if it did more resemble a Shiba Inu that a Golden, both would be unlikely.

You don't mention ear shape which is probably most important to help decide. If they are upright - spitz type like Shiba Inu, then I am guessing mixed breed; since they usually go with a pointed nose.

If they are flat, then I would say Kuvasz or Great Pyrenees...?

But I also initially thought Akita or Great Pyranees/spitz mix of some sort... Kuvasz sounds possible too...

Hmm, unfortunately no to all of those. His ears were upright. Out of all those he looked most like an Akita. Except he was much stockier and had longer hair. And his nose was more smushed. But it may have been an Akita... or some type of mix with it.

Laura-Not a Samoyed. He was a lot bigger.

He was a lot more broad than the one you have pictured, S1969. And his snout was a lot shorter and flatter.

He did kind of look like that Chow Chow you have pictured, except the other Chows I have seen all have a kind of wrinkled face and he didn't. Plus he was a lot bigger than an average Chow.

I think I'll just have to settle with the thought that he was probably some Akita mix or something of the sort. Whatever he was, he was absolutely gorgeous and I'd love to have one one day!

My first thought is a Tibetan Mastiff. They don't often come in white or cream, but they are very impressive dogs.

Chances are good that he's a Chow cross then - more common than an AkitaX, often fuzzy, and it seems like many of the ChowXs and "backyard" Chows loose the wrinkly/smooshed face. Check out this guy (he's apparently a ChowXGolden): http://www.google.com/imgres?q=chow+...9&tx=94&ty=101

Really long shot, but could it have been a Central Asian Shepherd? For a rare breed, there seem to be a lot of them around.
