Default Elastic breastplate cleaning and repair

How does everyone clean the elastic on their breastplates? I've never done it before but I have some that are encrusted with sweat and dirt, yuck! I don't want to wreck the leather, I was thinking of dipping it in warm water, applying soap, using a brush to lather, dip in water to remove. Any other methods?

I also have a breastplate where one of the elastics has broken. Has anyone had this repaired? Is it worth it or just scrap it?

    Thanks

I hang it up and use a toothbrush to get the elastic well, with gentle soap. Rinse by scrubbing with the toothbrush dipped after a few scrubs in clean water.
