I see this BNR on Omnibus entry forms....it's a divison for the event, correct? Usually follows BN and then BNR for the division...I am assuming BNR for Beginning Novice Rider or Beginner Novice Restricted???? If restricted, restricted by what or how? What are the rules?

Beginner Novice Rider - restricted to riders that haven't competed at [whatever the currents rules say about higher levels in X number of years, something like Training in the past 2 years].

4.5 RIDER (R) - Levels restricted by rider are limited to those competitors who have not completed more than two Horse Trials at the next highest level or higher in the previous 24 months. e.g. Training Rider - the competitor may not have completed more than two Horse Trials at the Preliminary Level or higher in the previous 24 months.
So, for Beginner Novice Rider (BNR), the rider may not have completed more than 2 horse trials at the Novice level in the past 2 years. The horse may have compteted at any level.
OTTBs rule, but spots are good too!

Then there's BNH (horse) and not to be confused with BNR (Big Name Rider) slang on the forums

This being why BNT is infinitely preferable to BNR when discussing big-name people.

Not always interchangeable. Many BNR's do not have a slew of students. George Morris although a BNT is not a BNR.

That is the OLD rule.
The current rule is
4.5 RIDER (R) - Open to competitors who have not completed an event above the
next highest level in the 5 years preceding the date of the competition, e.g. a Novice
Rider may have completed an event at Training level, but not Preliminary
level or higher in the 5 years preceding the date of the competition; a Training
Rider may have completed an event at Preliminary level, but not Intermediate
level or higher in the 5 years preceding the date of the competition.
So, for Beginner Novice Rider, the rider may not have completed at TRAINING in the last FIVE years. The horse may have competed at any level.

Thanks so much for explaining this. For some reason, I thought it meant "restricted". Makes sense!
