Just wondering what an average height most horses free jump. We jumped some of the horses in our barn.
As far as what is the average height that most people set in the jump chute, I would say 4'6" is pretty normal. I know when I was in Europe last summer we were free jumping the 3 and 4 year olds 4'-4'6". Stallion shows usually run at about 4'6" as well (maybe even 5'). That is high enough to see their technique but not so high that you might ruin their confidence or put too much stress on the joints if they are young. The idea of free jumping isn't to just see how high they can go, but rather to evaluate technique.
Here is one of our (then 3 year old) mares Ahisanita free jumping: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0A7ZT-wZJM This was her first time through the shoot so we did not push her height wise as she was relatively unfit coming straight from the field.
Usually we go by the following standards when free jumping, but obviously keep in mind that each horse is an individual and will tell you when it is time to quit:
2 year olds 1.0m
3 year olds 1.10m
4 year olds 1.20m
5 year olds: 1.30m
