At Saddle Seat World Cup competitions the riders all ride on strange horses they have never ridden before and compete in either the Three Gaited or Five Gaited division. For Three Gaited competition any three gaited saddle seat type breed can be used (Saddlebred, Morgan, Arabian, Half-Arabian, Friesian, National Show Horse, Boerperd) while for the Five Gaited competition only those breeds which can be five gaited are used (Saddlebred, National Show Horse, Boerperd). The riders must complete rail work as a group and individual pattern work. The UK and Namibia have also fielded teams in the past.
