I recently acquired an 8 YO step grand daughter. I don't know much about her other than she likes horses. She is bi lingual French English but doesn't read very well. Would this book be appropriate?

Misty of Chincoteague by Maguerite Henry may be a good start.

When my girls were eight, the youngest had been showing for four years, the oldest was preparing to spend the summer in Kentucky showing with the Foxie horse.... so really not much help... but my girls enjoyed the Pony Club series, and there was another series which I cannot remember the name of.

I think this is a little easier than Misty. "My Pony" by Susan Jeffers is really sweet, easier but still age-appropriate, and the illustrations are just gorgeous. I loved Thelwells when I was that age, not much reading required

I actually think "A Very Young Rider" might be quite a bit easier than Misty, but they are both great books!

A Very Young Rider is an easier read compared to Misty...both great books, though. There is also a series by American Girl and one of the books is similar to A Very Young Rider in part...easy to read, as well, and lots of color photos.

I read the Mysty series as a child. I was thrilled when, as an adult, I finally got to Chincoteague (they even gave a Mysty museum. Beware- Mysty and her foal Stormy are stuffed and in the living room).
