OCD surgery is scheduled for today and tie back is scheduled for Saturday. After seeing him, the surgeon decided not to do both on one day; he said that the big horses do not handle long anesthesia times well.

I was a little surprised that he is doing a normal tie-back; I have heard so much about lasers being used lately and another surgeon recommended a ventriculocordectomy. But this surgeon is supposed to be good so I will leave it to his judgment.

Still, I am going to be a nervous wreck for a few days!!

Thanks! He is out of surgery and it went well. They removed some very large chips. I went over to see him and he is groggy but otherwise okay. It is good that he will stay there a few days in their nice big stalls and round the clock care.

Thanks! Hopefully this will be the end of health issues for a while. My guy is "just" an OTTB, but he is 17.2 and I'd say at least 1500 lbs. Most people think he is a warmblood or draft cross.

UPDATE: They just let me know he is going in for his second surgery. I can't wait til this is all over!!

That is great news! Just what I have been hoing to hear. When my Clydesdale Tuffy had surger to remove a bone chip on his hock, I ended up leaving him in the hospital for ten days. But that was because he was too far from me to allow me to assume his daily care and I was afraid he might get an infection. Your horse will be a lot happier at home with you and I know from other things you have posted that you are up to the task of daily care. Good luck!

My "moose" (17.3+hh hanoverian gelding) had tie-back surgery April of 2011. He had a reaction to the drugs the first time around, and we had to reschedule the surgery for 2 weeks later (after he "redecorated" the clinic's operating room) but the surgery went smoothly, post care was icky but uneventful, and 18 mos later he has no issues, breathes better and more quietly, and subsequent scopes have all looked great. I wish your gelding a smooth healing process, and for the posters who've wondered about tie-back procedures, I can say mine was successful. Good luck and Jingles!
