The 12th Adoptable Horse of December is Laser. He is a pretty, bay, stocky, nine year old, grade gelding. Laser’s first foster home has worked with him and doesn’t believe he was broke to ride prior to coming to BEHS. He learned to carry a saddle, bridle, and rider in his first foster home. While working towards the 2012 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge his rider/trainer for the Challenge taught him to navigate trail obstacles and rode him in a round pen, arena, and field. Laser can be pushy on the ground, so he needs a firm handler.

I had him here with me briefly (as a stop-over between foster homes), and he's very regal looking in person. He almost looks like a little Andy or Andy cross in person.

I think dog rescuers have it a LOT easier identifying breeds a lot of times. It is nearly impossible with horses most of the time.

The 13th Adoptable Horse of December is Lila. Lila is a pretty two year old, stock-type filly. We think she's a buckskin dun - a very cool color! She's only about 13.3 hh, but she has the potential to grow a little more. Her foster home says that Lila is a sweet young horse. She’s easy to catch - walking up to people out in the pasture. She’s quiet and calm, and she loves attention and people. She’s a good age to start working with and then she would be ready to start under saddle next spring. She has potential to do almost anything! Her adoption fee is $250 and she's located in Springtown, TX.

The 14th Adoptable Horse of December is Mister. Mister is an approx. 13 year old, Quarter Horse/stock-type gelding. Mister spent a few weeks with a trainer for an evaluation after being returned in May 2012. The trainer said he’s broke to ride, but he’s a very reactive horse. If the rider puts his/her legs on Mister’s side, he’s going to move out quickly (often at a canter) and if the rider doesn’t take his/her legs off, Mister’s going to keep on going faster. He’s a strong horse, too, so he can be intimidating for a novice rider. We suspect he's done some roping or gaming in the past, and he seems to like working around cattle. We're hoping someone adopts him who will give him a job! He's located in George West and his adoption fee is $500.

The 15th adoptable horse of December is Peyton. Peyton is an older lady, but no one has told her she's 30! She's more like 30 going on 10. She's a Tennessee Walking Horse mare who is broke to ride and has been ridden by children in a pen and pasture and adults out on the trails. Due to her age, she shouldn't do any hard riding but if someone is looking for a horse to love and occasionally ride, Peyton has a lot to offer! Her adoption fee is just $150 and she's in George West, Texas.

The 16th Adoptable Horse of December is Polka Dot! Dot is an eight year old, grade mare - she's likely a Saddlebred cross (judging from her build and movement). She's been started under saddle, but she's a hot horse and very green. She'll need someone who can bring her along. She's been ridden in a pen, an arena, and out on the trails. She's a gorgeous mover and a sensitive soul who is just looking for the right person. She's located in Paradise, Texas and her fee is $400.

The 17th Adoptable Horse of December is Red Lady Tess. Tess is an approximately 18 year old, unregistered Quarter Horse/stock-type mare. Tess’ foster mom says she’s sweet and easy to handle on the ground. She suspects that with as gentle as Tess is, she’s likely broke to ride. She’s working with her on the ground and will soon start saddling her and see how she behaves. She did add that Tess does not longe well - most likely because she's blind in one eye. She’s fine when she can see the handler, but when she reverses and moves with her blind eye to the inside she gets panicky. Tess' adoption fee is $300, and she's located in George West, Texas.

The 18th Horse of December is Roux. Roux is an approximately 8 year old, unregistered/grade Quarter Horse mare. Roux is halter broke and stands for grooming, fly spray, and farrier work. She’s easy to catch and loves attention. She doesn’t appear to have any other training, but her foster home is working with her on the ground. She's plenty young enough to train, and she'll make someone a gorgeous riding horse. Her adoption fee is $250 and she's located in George West, Texas.

The 19th Adoptable Horse of December is Runnin' Thunder. Thunder is a two year old gelding, and he's been waiting for his forever home for quite some time! He isn't yet broke to ride, but he was used by Jack Lieser in a colt starting demo in October and did well. He's quiet and laid back, and he's going to make someone a gorgeous riding horse. He's located in Manvel, Texas and his adoption fee is $300.

The 20th Adoptable Horse of December is Taffy. Taffy is a three year old, Mustang/QH cross filly. Taffy’s been started under saddle in her foster home and is doing well. They started off working in a rope hackamore but have recently moved into a snaffle bit and she’s doing well. Taffy went on her first trail ride in early October and did great. She was a little nervous, for her (which would be calm for some horses), but she did everything that her rider asked her to do, including side-passing and backing up and down the trail and going into the creek. Her foster home thinks that after a few more times out on the trail she will be a pretty solid trail horse. She also has had the kids on her back a couple of times—she gave Alice (age 3) a ride (lead-line of course) back to the car after the trail ride yesterday. It says a lot that her foster home (Alice’s mom) trusts Taffy to do this. She continues to show her willingness and intelligence! She has potential as a great trail horse or a fun playday horse for a youth or smaller adult. Her foster home thinks she would do well at ACTHA or NATRC competitions.

The 21st adoptable horse of December is Shiraz. She's a lovely, 12 year old, Arabian mare who needs an adopter willing to work with her. She stands for the farrier, grooming, saddling, and bridling but doesn't seem to be broke to ride. She's young enough to continue training, and she's a pretty mover who could make a nice open show horse or pleasure horse. She's located in Taylor, Texas and her adoption fee is $300.

The 22nd adoptable horse of December is Shy Mist. She is a six year old, BLM Mustang mare who came to BEHS from a neglect case. She is catchable, leads, and loads. She's learning to stand for the farrier and has started work in the round pen. Like many BLM Mustangs, she's nervous with new things but is looking for a human to bond with. She's a beautiful mover and has a bright future ahead of her - she just needs someone to bring along her training. She's located in Floresville, TX (near San Antonio) and her adoption fee is $300.

The 23rd Adoptable Horse of December is Whisper. Whisper is a 6 year old, grade Pinto/unregistered Paint mare. Whisper’s foster home worked with her for the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge in October 2012. She did a lot of ground work with Whisper and then began riding her. She says that Whisper likes to go and can be nervous in new situations. With a patient handler/rider, she can work through her fear and she has great athletic ability. She will need a patient and consistent rider/handler who can continue to increase her confidence both in herself and in that person. You can see you desire to please and she tries really hard to do so. She's located in Boerne, TX and her adoption fee is $500.

The 24th Adoptable Horse of December is a donkey - in honor of Christmas Eve and Mary's ride to Bethlehem on a donkey. Wonky is a yearling donkey who was born in BEHS after he dam was discovered pregnant an estray. He knows how to lead (as well as any donkey) although he isn't great at loading. He's always been well loved and cared for, but I think he deserves a home of his own! He's located in Elgin an his adoption fee is $200.

The 25th adoptable equine of December is one of my favorite foster horses - Tocho. Tocho is a 4 year old, mustang gelding. Tocho came to BEHS as part of a neglect case, and both of his parents were BLM Mustangs. Tocho hadn’t been handled before coming to BEHS. He’s had three foster homes working with him, and he’s now a different horse! He can be caught in pasture, leads well, loads, stands tied. He’s learned to longe, line drive, wear a bit and bridle, and carry a saddle. His current foster home has sat on him once and is continuing to work with him to get him started under saddle. He’s a curious and intelligent horse who is really willing to please. He is spooky/easily startled, but he settles down quickly. He isn’t going to be a child’s horse or novice horse, but he has great potential to do nearly anything. He’s a gorgeous mover and his foster home thinks he might be a nice lower-level dressage or western dressage horse. He also has potential as a trail or pleasure horse. He's located in Lorena (near Waco, TX) and his adoption fee is $400.

The 26th Adoptable Horse of December is Yancy. Yancy is a 8 year old, unregistered Paint, gelding. Yancy’s foster home says that he’s friendly and noisy. He comes up to check everyone out, and he is easy to catch and leads well. He stands tied, and he stands for the farrier. She says that he is a little leery of having his rump brushed and wants to turn to face you but if you are patient he will allow it. He stands for baths as long as you start at his feet and work your way up. His foster home stands he stands well for saddling and mounting, but he’s not crazy about bits and has a scar on the side of his mouth that might bother him. She thinks he’ll do better with a hackamore or other bitless bridle. He’s very green under saddle but has a lot of potential. He’s a strong and big guy, so he would do best with a confident rider who can continue working with him. He's located in Manvel, Texas and his adoption fee is $400.
