Exclamation PSA: Some people are not what they seem...

Debated about posting under my regular username or an alter. Don't want to hurt anyone, just feel like I need to give a general warning.

While reading an older thread today I came across a post that sounded familiar. It sounded familiar because I was there in real life. I went back and read more posts by the same individual and confirmed that she is a former friend of mine. I was shocked to say the least.

I'm not going to publicly out her because I feel sorry for her that she has to resort to creating a fictitious life for herself on a semi-anonymous bb. If you absolutely must know PM me and I will tell you my identity and hers. Some of the things she has lied about are small and harmless, like being married when she is actually single and lives with her mom or having this great show record when in reality her horses are lucky to leave their stalls once a week and only ever get shown at the county fair.

What prompted me to create an alter and write this post is that she is claiming to be a large animal vet and is giving advice. She is not a large animal vet, she is a small animal tech. She has done some ride alongs with a few of the local equine vets, but that's it. In some cases she has given advice that is completely inappropriate and could cause harm.

Just remember that anybody can say anything they want on the internet, and as another member's signature says "consult your veterinarian".

Yeah. I see this a lot. Like the COTHer who said she had been doing ballet for years (fat as a pasture puff pony that girl was and she later admitted she never bothered to go to the supposed Ballet classes she was taking), her mom was a member of the Washington Opera and a well known socialite (her mom doesn't even live in this area), told me she had been riding for years (she just started riding when I met her and she was leasing a horse from another COTHer), told me her job was high-end IT in the telecom industry (she was a pathetic administrative assistant that got kicked around from desk to desk and didn't know anything about IT), claimed to have fox hunted several times (that was easy to figure out), and she also said she was single (lived with a guy she later introduced me to as her boyfriend and she also admitted she was hooking up with a bunch of guys on the side and tried to hook up with me as well). What happened to her? Well, she got fired from her job, her boyfriend grew some balls and kicked her ass to the curb, she got knocked up, and now her sociopathic ass lives on the other side of the country where nobody knows her game. I say you go Gallagher on her Melon of Madness and let the truth be known!

Claiming to be a vet crosses the line from fantasy land into something pretty serious.

    Indeed. It's also illegal.

Ugh, yeah. Its one thing to claim you have fancy show horses and a competition record. Its another thing entirely to essentially falsify your professional credentials.

I hope most of us know that a vet should always, always be consulted rather than posting on an online forum.

Actually, it is horse related, since she is a member of this forum and is giving horse related (sometimes veterinary) advice to people on this forum. If she was just giving advice about something like, I don't know, body clipping, I would leave it alone. I just don't want someone who may not know better, like a newbie looking for advice, to get hurt because they took her advice thinking that she is who she says she is.

Yes, if it isn't going to be breaking a CoTH rule and the poster is still active you really should say ________ is not a large animal vet. It's in the board's best interest, not that everyone would take medical advice from a total stranger online, but some people might.

Exactly! It's immoral and it's illegal. Don't let it slide. There's enough scummy behaviour in the horse world when you're face-to-face with people and it just continues when you're not. There has to be a line somewhere. Even though said individual will probably just disappear for a few months and come back under another name, it's better than nothing and it helps identify future transgressions.

Ok... You guys have convinced me, for the sake of the newbies that use this forum and may not know any better and for the naive people who still don't get that people lie. Her screen name is Graatan. She also used to post under Equinetech.

She is a good small animal tech, but by no means is she a vet.

All this time I thought she was a vet. Are you absolutely sure?

Well I know someone who said she knew Lex IRL when she lived in VA. And she said he really is as hot as he says he is.

There are doctors doing operations who aren't doctors.
Lawyers giving legal advice who aren't lawyers.
I always check vet credentials. The internet is a big help in finding out if someone is degreed. But then you have to also know where that person graduated in his class and what school he is degreed from.

I still want to know the imposter that Lex referred to on off topic day.

According to the information at hand, she was attending vet school when posting under the older name and now a vet under the more recent account with a good seperation of time between the two usernames. It is plausible that everything is on the up and up but without actually knowing the person in question, there's nothing that we can pin down as fact or fiction without going through the posts of the two usernames and doing the math post by post.

Absolutely positive. She is a certified veterinary technician, that's it. She has(had?) aspirations of becoming a vet, but dropped out of vet school. As I said before, if it was something harmless I wouldn't have outed her, but claiming to be a dvm is serious.

As far as I know her posts as Equinetech are legit. She did attend vet school, but she dropped out several years ago. She used to work as a tech at the small animal clinic I use for my pets, but got laid off. She currently works as a tech at a Banfield clinic (you know, the vet clinics inside petsmart).

Thanks alter horse. The only horse vet I take advice from is John Malark. And I checked out his credentials long ago. And his references.

You know, it's a terrible burden that I bear. I just suck it up and try to go on as best as I can but sometimes it just gets to be too much and I get kind of emotional about it.

As for the imposter, pretty much everything regarding her is gone now except for a few things that she couldn't delete. She was heavily active on some other forums. Catchride - which finally shut down as of a few weeks ago to hide all the crap that went on there - was where she did most of her posting and fibbing over the past few years. The other places she posted outed her ages ago and you'd have to dig up the stuff with the various screen names and she even created a BB of her own back when personal BBs were tres chic. There was a thread posted on here many months ago where someone came on here looking for her after she posted some less than flattering statements on some blog entry regarding the riding of a young girl and it was apparently some very disturbing stuff. That was really the last anyone saw of her except for whatever nonsense she was posting on Catchride.

haha I didn't even know catchride still existed.....there were some characters who posted on there.

Anyway I think the lesson learned here is to take anything anyone tells you through an online forum with a HUGE grain of salt. I thought (hoped?) most people who posted on online forums would know that.
