    Exclamation Webshots

Many of you have a Webshots account. Webshots has been discontinued and a pay-to-view hosting service known as "Smiles" has been put in it's place. If you log in to Smiles using your Webshots account info, you should be able to save your photos to your computer and then move them to another service like Flickr, which is still free and allows you to share your photos.

I give the new pay-to-view site about oh, a couple of months before it fails spectacularly. I can't fathom how anyone thinks this is a viable business model, unless it's geared towards hosting/viewing porn.
Thanks for the warning, as I know a few people with Webshots accounts.

Casual users mostly abandoned Webshots for Facebook or Flickr several years ago which left mostly well-invested professionals - who are also a market demographic that Flickr heavily caters to - as the primary demographic. Going to a pay model under new ownership was really the only option apart from shutting down the service. Will it work? Probably not at this point given how much decay they already have had to the brand and reputation and the obviously more successful competitors.

I used Webshots and it told me that I had to get changed over to Smiles by Dec 1 because it would be closed. You may not be able to get in anymore.

I don't like the Smiles because the photos are not able to be put into Albums. Haven't been asked for money yet. Most of my pictures on Webshots were for examples of things I was in discussions about. Made it easier to "see" what we were talking about specifically.

If people can't get into their account and they can't save their photos I am sure that webshots or Smiles, will hear about it from several very angry people! They didn't give much notice it seems to allow people to go and download their photos and save them elsewhere. I know I have photos on Photobucket that I would never be able to get back having swapped computers or dead hard drives over the years.

Like everyone else I use Facebook or Photobucket. I was using Smugmug for my photography business. Smugmug is $40 bucket a year or $5 bucks a month for it's basic service, and it's wonderful, but really only worth it if you are selling photos and not just putting up hobby pics.

I got a ton of email about this from webshots prior to the change over, and there were multiple notices on their site. Not sure why this is a surprise to anyone? They've been very vocal about it for the last 60 days or so.

While I can't view the Webshots terms of service anymore, I'm quite sure they probably covered the fact that they have no responsibility for the loss of anything uploaded there and can terminate any user's service at any time. That's pretty standard.

Download those irreplaceable photos from Photobucket, if you don't want to chance losing them, and then make sure you have an additional backup. It amazes me that people don't back up their data and then cry when it's lost. I have two copies of everything in my physical possession and would never rely on an online backup service, even one that costs money.

CRAP! I wished I'd heard about this sooner! The email address I used for webshots is one I very rarely check.
