Smile At last we made some progress! (small brag)

Remember how a while back i was working through some problems with the horse´s ground manners? There were 2 specifically problems: one he would throw himself into his stall, regardless of there being a handler in the end or not. The other was that he wouldn't stand still mounting.

well, we've finally made some progress. Instead of running over me to get to his stall there are now 2 scenarios: he either follows me slowly or, if i see he's just a little too eager, I stop him - which i couldn't do before - make him back up a little and then slowly walk in with him following me. I guess what they say is true: you get a lot done with persistence.

The other problem was getting him to stand still for mounting. He would stand perfectly still and the moment I got my foot in the stirrup he'd move backwards or forwards. I tried being patient, try to "negotiate"the treats, but the one thing that works like a charm is lifting my hand up and occasionally give him a bop in the nose. That's when I say hey, mister, play time is over time to take things seriously. Looks like it a simply a matter of discipline in this case.

    sorry this was so long.
Yes, I smell like a horse. No, I don't consider that to be a problem.

Yay for progress! My mare was (and can be) a brat on the ground... it's so great when they start to check in with the program, isn't it?

    Go you!

Excellent! My horse would do the walk forward/backward JUST as I was about to mount when I first got him. Infuriating. Took a while but he got with the program, too.
What's wrong with you?? Your cheese done slid off its cracker?!?!

Mine would mess around at the mounting block too. I realized I was taking too long...tightening the girth, making sure I was *ready*. I still use the step to tighten the girth but then I walk him in a 10m circle and position him at the mounting block. Then step step step and on...no more thinking about it for a while. That helped a lot.
