What is a "show series"? Is this where you and your trainer manage shows and the site is for competitors' convenience?
I don't know as much as I should about blogging software, so the site I manage is extremely dry html ... just the facts for competitors as delivered by the show management: www.goldenstatedressage.com
I imagine it could get fancier, but the business reason for the site is to reduce phone calls and emails to the show manager and that's it. Not to entertain or advertise ... just support the show schedule.
The one VERY important thing to keep in mind is *immediate* responsiveness. When competitors complain that there is a typo or missing information, correct and re-post as quickly as humanly possible.

If you really feel over your head w/ this, instead of trying to develop a full on site, use existing web tools to plan your show series. I strongly recommend Eventbrite.com. Cheap, easy, no programming, and lets you do things like send out invitations and reminders right from the eventbrite site.
I tolerate all kinds of animal idiosyncrasies.
I've found that I don't tolerate people idiosyncrasies as well. - Casey09
