    Default Rockland, NY/Bergen, NJ barns?

I just moved to the area and am struggling to find a good and reasonable barn.

I would love to find a barn that has a training program. I would like to show, but do not want to feel forced.

I have ridden with eventers in the past. But I am looking for a more hunter/jumper barn. Heck, I'm pretty open on the disciple as I am getting desperate just to get on a horse!

I do not know anyone in the area, so any sort of referral/advice/tid-bit would be appreciated.

    Thank you!!

    Hi Canadian Blue!
I just moved from that area to Nashville TN. Rockland/Upper NJ are Definately not a horse friendly area!! I hope you have cash!!! Everything is SO expensive there!
Anyway, the nicest barn is Top O The Line. I think the town is Chestnut Ridge, NY. I am pretty sure they have a website. They are a hunter/jumper place.

I took lessons at the Ramapo Equestrian Center, as I couldnt afford Top O the Line. They are more no frills, but had an indoor large arena with lights, a few outdoor arenas and also trails. There was a great hunter/jumper guy who gave lessons, I dont remember his name but he was European, maybe French. This was about 3 yrs ago, not sure what is going on there now. I think the town was Suffern, NY.
    Good luck!!!!!

Ditto Top O The Line and Ramapo. The only other one I can think of is Rockleigh Equestrian Center.

Thank you for the replies. I'm taking a lesson at Top of the Line, however, board seems as though it's full service only and I really like to be a bit more hands on with my horse. I'm not sure if it's really the right environment. Plus - I don't own a $100K horse, so we might just look like schmucks. I have hear about Ramapo but was struggling to find anything more about it - it's a bit far from me as well. I was hoping there might be a few more choices out there!

Three Sisters Farm in Mahwah, NJ. The farm is home to Pony Power Therapies, a therapeutic riding program, but when I was in the area they also had regular boarding and lessons. http://ponypowernj.org/

I worked at a private farm at 200 Stabled Way, Mahwah, NJ (which is right scross the river from Three Sisters) which has since been sold and do not know who owns that property now and wether or not they have any sort public program.

I used to go team penning at West Milford Equestrian Center, Newfoundland, NJ http://www.westmilfordequestrian.net/

Places in the area I am not familiar with other than i know they are the area:
    Pompton Plains, NJ http://njequestrian.com/
    Franklin Lakes, NJ http://www.saddleridgeridingcenter.com/
    Oakland, NJ http://www.winterhaveneq.com/

    Thanks Renae!
It looks like three sisters is only for those under 16 - but perhaps a good place to look at volunteering to get the horse fix.

NJ equestrian center looks interesting, a little far but with an indoor it's doable, I am going to have to call this weekend. And Winter Haven is really close to my office - can we say lunch rides?!

Team Penning has always seemed interesting but out of my realm, it might be fun to try something completely new.

Thank you for the tips. Does anyone know any inside info on these places?

I would also go into Ramapo Saddlery and ask about places for lessons and boarding http://www.theramaposaddlery.com/

I tried to go there this weekend actually. I turned on the street and didn't realize it was a business. Was confused because all I saw was houses, gave up, got on 17 and THEN saw the sign. But at that point it was to late. I will have to try again this weekend now that I know where it is. I need some new winter gloves anyways.

Yes, it is in a house on a funny little dead end street. Also, you can go upstairs. The first time or two I went there I did not know that customers were allowed to go upstairs! All the western stuff is upstairs and so is the clearance clothing.

Oh thank you! I would probably be too timid to realize you can go upstairs - but would hate to miss out on a good deal. I love clearance!

This is the other tack shop in the area, a bit farther away from where you are http://www.barnardssaddlery.com/
The consignment stuff is upstairs at that shop.
