I'm not looking for a miracle here but just some peace for my old Murphy.

We were tackling his UTI with antibiotics but he just didn't seem to be getting better. Last night was a bad night for him, as starting yesterday morning, he completely stopped eating (his appetite has been waning for the past 10 days or so). All night, he was restless and howling and just terribly uncomfortable.

My vet is not open on the weekend so off to the specialty vet ER we went this morning.

It's so much worse than I thought. If I'd been smart, I'd have let him go down there. But the vet thought he could be kept comfortable for a few days so I could bring him home to let him go.

He has liver cancer. I'm still a bit in shock. He's 19 so while I could pursue what it is and we could do chemo, I just can't put him through all that. He is terrible at the vet and today was miserable enough for him.

Right now, he's wrapped in a towel, cradled in my arms and lap. He had to be sedated and he's still a bit out of it.

My heart is breaking for what I have to do. Please say a few and jingle a few for Murphy to be comfortable as we get ready to say good-bye.

Jingles for your pup. 19 is a great life! I went through something very similar with my 16 year old girl this year, and was so happy to be able to let her go at home, in my arms, as the vet made her crazy too.
Here's hoping for a peaceful, loving end for your Murphy.

Praying for Murphy and for you tonight. You obviously gave Murphy a wonderful and long life while in your care, so filled with love. Nineteen in an amazing age for any dog to attain and I pray that you can focus on the many wondrous adventures you shared through the years. Im so sorry It really is only the rare cat who will tolerate trips to the vet for chemotherapy, most are fine with the drugs, but hate hate hate the trip to the vets, the bloodwork and the restraint for the chemo. If Murphy isnt a fan of the vets already, you know you are making the best decision for HIM.

You're a good mom to Murphy, you've done the right thing.

I am so sorry about Murphy. While 19 is a long life it is never long enough when shared with a beloved *family* member.

Thank you all so much......it's appreciated beyond words.

Murphy, I didn't say, is a cat - even though he had some dog-like qualities: walked on a leash, would fetch toys, would sit and wait at the door when he heard your car come in. He's been my fur baby for such a long time, my first pet I got when I was an adult out on my own for the first time. It will be very strange to not have him here anymore.

Murphy had a GREAT night last night - ate lots of food and wanted lots of scritches. What a gift! I'm sure the pain meds are helping so as long as I can keep him comfortable with that, I'll hold off on the good-bye. I'm sure it will buy us a few days anyway.

It was so very good to have my old Murphy back last night. I feel sure I made the right decision now.

If you haven't already, talk to your vet about home euthanasia.

(look in your area for a vet that specialises in home "calls" if your regular vet is opposed)
