Default replacing plugs on heated water buckets?

I am replacing one today- the plugs get trashed on mine after a time with horses stepping on them and such. I am a bit worried about the fact that it won't be sealed, as it is on the original. Has anyone successfully replaced plugs on them? I've thrown out too many of them just because the points (?) broke off of the plugs.

DH puts the heated muck buckets right next to the fence and runs the cord under a big flat rock to a tpost outside, where he connects it to the extension cord at the top of the tpost under a five gallon bucket "hat". We use the big yellow contractor's extension cords. Apart from the nomal horse sized bucket we gave the dog, who has been chewing on the plastic, we have had no breakage or issues with the plugs, but under the hat they are safe from everything except condensation.
