I have found some old but nice 100% wool blankets. I got to thinking...wouldn't a nice wool saddle pad be a good thing? Keep the muscles warm while wicking moisture away? I love all things wool (coolers, blanket liners, etc) and can't seem to find any english wool pads. Is there a reason as in it's a bad idea? I see lots of Western ones! Any ideas if I could cut a piece of wool blanket and make a schooling pad? Thanks!
Please excuse the typos...I'm always on my iPhone and autocorrect is not my friend. Yes I mean mares autocorrect...not mates.
I like thick wool felt. I think it is good for padding, protection & temp. Easy to find for western saddles, not for English as you said. There are a few places that make them & at some point I do want to get one.
I just got a wool felt girth for the same reason.
I actually recently thought about looking around for a wool Navajo blanket, after a discussion here. I would like a solid color one, though, no designs :P
I have a shaped one I got at a consignment shop and I love it. Keeps them way drier than a cotton pad. I would like to find one to use as a liner under my square pads. If I was handy I could make one from an army blanket.
KAB, I like wool too! They are the norm at saddleseat barns. The ones used at the arab/saddleseat barn near me were wool felt covered with herculon/cordura material. Those suckers last forever. They just hosed them once in awhile and hung them over a fence in the sun to dry.
http://www.chicksaddlery.com/page/CDS/PROD/FP7202 I have this one, it's very thin but that is good because my saddles are fitted to my horses so there isn't room or need for bulky pads. One thing I love about wool is that it takes the shape of the horse's back if you use it on the same horse over time.
I also have this one: http://www.chicksaddlery.com/page/CDS/PROD/PP4890 and like it too. It doesn't have enough wither relief for those with big withers, but it works well under my dressage, cc, saddleseat and round skirt western saddles. It is bulkier but the cutaway leg design doesn't get in my way. It's about 1 inch thick, where the liner is only about 1/4 inch or so thick.
But yeah, I do like wool pads a lot. They do wick better, and regulate temp well, not too hot or cold.
I have ridden in and like these: http://www.thermatex.co.uk/thermatex...e_Cloth__.html
But that was before there were Ecogold and Coolmax and other temperature regulating materials out there. Just as I have switched largely from wool to fleece for myself, same for saddle pads
