    Default Spin-off: Wine Snobs?

    We have lots of threads about not knowing anything about wine, but I'm sure there have to be a few COTHers out there who are mega-wine dorks/snobs. (And I don't mean snob in a $$$-sense, but rather just folks who know a lot about wine!) Let's talk.

    We're always partial to Bordeaux—drank an '88 Sociando-Mallet with Thanksgiving dinner that was a little past its prime, unfortunately—but also love experimenting with interesting Rieslings, particularly older ones. (Bought an '82 back in April and that was an experience!) Also have been getting into grower champagnes lately too...

    So, what have you been drinking?

    I also love the older Rieslings, I'm always looking for that petroleum note in them.

    I think my favorite wine might be Pouilly Fume, but it's hard to find here (curse your liquor store monopoly and its limited selection, province!).

    I hope to be a wine snob in the future! Ive just gotten into wine in the past 2 or 3 years, so I have a lot to learn!

    I have a batch that is somehow "lost" right now at Dulles. I am not a happy camper. It's all coming from France and Germany and supposedly WITH MY BROTHER. But...my brother is now in Iowa and my wine...well, it's not.

    Grrr.

    There IS a lot to learn and I am NOT an expert. But I have learned quite a bit about SA wines and WA wines because both seem to produce good Cabs at reasonable costs.

    I'm all ears for more info though!!!!

    My Dad, whom I've been estranged from for nearly 20 years? This is what we have in common. He has a home in France and brings back good wine for me. It is our connection. So I'll learn whatever I can.
    A good horseman doesn't have to tell anyone...the horse already knows.

    Might be a reason, never an excuse...

    Yes! I had always heard about Riesling having notes of "diesel" or "petrol," but had never experienced it until this particular bottle—it was quite unique!

    You should pick up the most recent Wine Spectator. It's their Top 100 Wines issues and a shocking number of them are very inexpensive. I think I'm going to try and work my way through all of them that are under $30 or so, just as my own education.

    I am an aspiring wine snob. Funny thing about the reislings, it is the one white wine that I generally like. Otherwise I am a big fan of the dry/semi-dry reds.
    There is a local winery that has a great reisiling, and beautiful scenery, I got married there lol.

    My husband is a wine specialist for the biggest wine/liquor store in the country, so yes. (: We have wine people over for blind tastings, he teaches classes, we go to wineries all the time, and he brings home bottles every night--leftovers from classes and pourings, plus bottles he buys at a nice discount. Our goldfish were named Gruner, Aglianico and Txakolina. It is pretty awesome. He is more into reds than I am, mostly Barolos. We both like Tokaji, Chenin, super-Tuscans, and Rieslings, though he likes more Alsatians. Being so close to Ontario, I also looooove good icewines.

    I was really only familiar with the standard ice wines that you can buy in any Canuck dutyfree (Peller, Inniskillin) and they were...fine, but not that interesting.
    Then we went on a wine tour of the Niagara region and I discovered a whole range of ice winey wonder. The best was the Ice House's 2006 Northern Ice that I swear has a really authentic burnt-caramel flavor. I mean it starts crisp, the sweet caramel hits, and then there's this long delicious burnt/bruleed bitter finish to it, it's wonderful.

    Your husband has basically my dream job. SO jealous.

    In reply to the OP, my wine drinking varies quite a lot. Last night was Prosecco, tonight was Colores Del Sol Malbec (may I recommend? It is very reasonably priced lately, down to $9.99 from $19.99.) It just depends on what I'm eating and my mood.

    I LOOOVE wine. Basically food and wine is one of the most important things for my husband and I. We go on trips just for food and wine, no joke! We pretty much have a little of most types of wine in our cellar, but can never seem to keep enough Champagne! Riesling is probably my favourite grape because of its versatility from bone dry to dessert wine sweet.

    I will fully embrace my wine snobbery, no wine from a box! Great wine can be found for reasonable prices. For instance Washington, Oregon and Argentina make lovely affordable wines. My husband and I venture to Washington every year just to taste and bring back wine. In fact we got married at Va Piano!

    I don't know a whole lot about wine, but I do know that I was raised on good wine by a father who knows a thing or two about it, so I refuse to drink crap. Doesn't have to do with $$$ necessarily, but I know a good wine when I taste one. I have actually been called a wine snob a time or two for not drinking (IMO) horrible wine. That's fine. I'd rather not drink at all than drink bad wine.

    On that note, on Thanksgiving my father opened a bottle of 1996 Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon that I bought for him in 2001. I've been telling him he needs to drink it for the last several years; I guess he finally realized I'm not getting engaged any time soon and he better get on with it before the wine goes bad. It was a few years past its prime, but still a very nice wine. Now I need to go buy another one and make sure we drink it within the 10-12 year mark!

    Snap Moogles, we plan holidays around where is good to eat/drink

    SarahandSam - my husband would love that job! We owned a fine wine retail store for four years, before that he worked in wine retail. It's a hard job when you turn up for work at 9am and there's 30 top notch wines for tasting (he is very good, uses the spit bucket; me I'm not so good - dribbles down my chin etc is my excuse hehe hence I decide what I really want to try so I don't end up a dribbly mess ). Tonight I'm sipping on a cheapie quaffer (on special in NZ at NZD17.00), Villa Maria Cellar Selection viognier, 2010 - not a bad little drop. I won't get started on what I like, it's easier to say what I don't like, which pretty much is only sav blanc.

    The biggest thing I miss about not owning the wine shop is having to pay retail for my wine now *sob* whereas my husband misses the dynamism of the industry and the people.

    As I said in the other thread - I am a red Côtes-du-Rhône (preferably Côtes-du-Ventoux or -Luberon) lover, with a few forays in Burgundy or Loire wines. My in-laws live in the Loire valley and I've discovered great wines there. I can't drink the Cabernet-Sauvignons (i.e, pretty much all Bordeaux) and the like. Hate them. Pinot Noir is ok.
    I'm no snob tho, don't know much about wines...for me it's just a matter of personal taste. And most white wines give me headaches.
    I've tried ice wines from Quebec but didn't like them I'll stick with Beaumes-de-Venise, and Sauternes.
    Ottbs - The finish line is only the beginning!

    Horse with no Name, I also avoid the spit bucket. (: It's just gross! Husband and all his wine friends use it though...

    Moogles, there are actually some decent boxed wines! We usually have a box in the fridge now for just everyday "lunchtime" wine. I like the Silver Birch sauv blanc.

    c.u.at.x., I was particularly jealous when he got free trips to Bordeaux and Tuscany. I had been teaching a year longer than he worked in wine, and I realized that he made more money than I did to drink wine at work, get vanned out to five-course tastings at fancy restaurants, and go to Europe. I seriously keep thinking about applying there myself... although every time I hear a story about an asshole customer, I do make myself remember that it's still retail...

    Coanteen, I think I've been there but can't remember that one--will have to check it out again! The best I had was an Inniskillin from '83. It was liquid gold. I didn't want it to end.
