I'm looking for a leather halter as a gift for a friend, I need it to be under $40 to keep in the gifting price range. Cob sized for a finer head, and the ability to add a name plate. Thanks!

Not likely. Have you looked at the price of leather and labor lately? I mean if a simple set of quality reins runs $90 (and they do on the LaSalle site) how can somebody make a halter for $40 and turn a profit?

One possible exception would be an Amish or Mennonite leather shop. They make some good quality stuff, albeit generally kind of "plain" in terms of "finish."

Good luck in your search; I'd want to "handle" any under $40 leather halter before I bought it.

Nonsense, I've bought quality reins for under $40 before. SStack has several nice halters for under $40, has anyone seen them in person? I've seen their bridles and other tack and it's all nice stuff.

I won a leather halter from Schneiders (SSTack) a couple of years ago and it's quite a decent halter. I believe it's this one: http://www.sstack.com/stable_halters...elmont-halter/

It's listed as $29.99 and they have a handful of others at the same price that have fancier stitching, padding, etc. I've also gotten some nice halters from an Amish gentleman a friend of mine knows for between $35-40. No fancy stitching but the leather is very nice and thick and he makes them in several sizes, so that may be something to check into if you have any Amish near you.

kyhorse.com makes a fantastic, show-ring worthy halter for $30-$35 + $7.50 flat-rate shipping. They charge $5 more to add a name plate. Really nice halters, much nicer than the web site pictures suggest. I'm pretty sure deltawave, MayaTy02, and a few other COTHers have them and are very pleased with them.

I was gifted one of Schneider's halters, and it's lovely :-) Very thick, and the nameplate is nice. The leather isn't mindblowing, but it's solid and looks much more expensive than it was!

The Premier ones from Schneiders are great. The cob size is perfect on my Arabs fine head. I got the nameplate on it and the whole thing was about $40 total. It looks and feels like a considerably more expensive halter than it is.

I've seen nicer coardboard on cereal boxes than that Chick's halter. Fine for every-day throw on the fence don't care use but not particularly good as a "nice" halter. I would not give it as a gift, personally.

It could have gone up in the meantime but I don't think it will have gone up past $40.

I bought a pony halter from them last year. I called with measurements because pony is hard to fit. I received an absolutely beautiful halter for a great price--that didn't quite fit. The clerk hadn't had an actual halter to measure against in the store and used my measurements of just the leather parts against the spec sheet they use to cut leather, and it turned out their small halter had much smaller fittings than the one I measured.

They replaced it free of charge, and I can't recommend them highly enough.

Stay far away from the Chicks halter. I asked for it for an Xmas gift last year and it was a train wreck. Literally couldn't use it because the tanning stench was so horrible I couldn't be near the thing. Cheap leather that was cracked wide open in the noseband, bunches of black and green gunk covering the hardware. The nameplate looked nothing like the photos, it looked like tin, was crooked, the nailheads were smashed to sharp pieces that could cut you, the lettering was awful and my horses name was misspelled even though it was sent to them correctly.
