I just finished reading the earlier thread on the cost of raising a horse from the womb and I am now intrigued. Do any of you have any pictures/stories about horses that you have raised either from birth or from very young?

Share them with me and entertain my curiosity!

Here is my 4 y.o. TB/QH, Caspian ("Casper"), that I have raised since birth and trained completely on my own. I own his mom and bred her as I love her character and wanted some piece of her (she is now 22). Casper is turning out far better than any of my wildest expectations.

First turnout after birth
Several weeks old
Less than 10 rides under saddle (3 y.o.)
Today

I am taking things slow so I haven't done much jumping but he is showing lots of natural talent in the little we have done so I am excited to see what next year will bring! We did do his first schooling show earlier this fall. He acted like a pro and came in 1st and 2nd in the two flat classes we did.

He definitely inherited his mom's character - he loves to please and is very confident. All in all, he is a fancy little guy which makes my job so easy!

All of our guys are home bred (ages ranging from 1 to 15 years. My mother in law is a breeder) and I have helped raise and trained all of them except for the 15 year old (I met my husband 10 years ago so he was 5 at the time). I'm proud of all of them and have tons of fun with them It was/is a lot of work but I wouldn't have it any other way. Its been so much fun growing with them and they have all been such a pleasure to work with and have around.
The first picture of the black cob was bred, born and raised at our farm and I trained him but he was my mother in laws pony. The next 2 pictures are of our 3 year old that was born at our farm but went to the states for a year and then came back. I had him as a yearling and have just started to train him. The foal picture and the next picture are of our yearling. We have had him since he was 6 months old. The driving pictures are of our 15 year old and 9 year old that we have had since they were born. They are all good boys and I love them all!

omg these threads are killing me.. between the OTTB picture one and this one, there are so many pictures to look at and it's proving to be a very effective distraction from the 40+ pages of term papers I need to write before the end of next week.. love it!!

It has been a wonderful 4 years. She jumped a 3'6 course today with ease. My little girl is all grown up! She's doing the Young Horse Series next summer with a Pro. I get to watch and pay the bills. But, it's nice to see my first born doing really well.

First is Rocafeller aka Ace. He is 4 and just went to his first baby hunter show last week. I bred him to be my hunter derby horse. He is very brave, got that from his daddy Roc USA. his full brother is 7 months now.

I love my two boys! This year I bred their mother to a welsh pony, very excited to see that cross!

I love breeding and watching them develop. I have been very lucky to have a great mare and I have loved the cross with Roc USA!

I fulfilled my lifelong dream to have a homebred - so I bred my TB mare to a sport horse TB who was a GP jumper (Final Pool). The filly was gorgeous so I bred her to Royal Appearance, the filly is my current saddle horse and I love her and her looks (lots of presence). I also have her 4 y.o. ISH half brother,
so have enjoyed three generations.

This makes me wish I had more pictures of my horse as a youngster I officially got her as a three year old, but was involved with her life and training since her birth. She was born at my barn and unfortunately, her mother did not have any milk, so we ended up having to send her to a surrogate. She came back to us with essentially one nostril...one side had been bitten by a dog and was sewn up into a ball with a small breathing hole.

After receiving plastic surgery to reconstruct her nostril, she became my little "project" to care for and to aid in her rehab. Long story short, she's now mine and we have been together for the last 7 years.


This is from her first outing off the farm in a hunter futurity class with me as a 14 year old straight off of ponies (It was somewhat like the blind leading the blind). I do apologize for the copyright...I cannot find the purchased version of this picture anywhere:

This is my homebred OLD mare, now 8 years old. I bred my nice mare, when I determined I needed to replace her, but knew I could never afford to buy another nice horse. I only had her, because I got her for a song. I have raised this one and broke her myself and have done almost all the training. She has turned out much nicer than I had ever even dreamed of. Super quiet and super great mind, which is what has allowed me to be her "trainer". I tried to keep track of expenses at the time and figured it cost about $4,000 to get her on the ground in 2004. That is just breeding and additional care cost for her mother, not any basic costs, like board and shoeing for her mother, since I already owned the mare and was paying that, anyway. There has been some discussion by some folks at my barn of wanting to do embryo transfer from her, as I am not nearly done(at least I hope not!) having fun with her, yet!

Did I mention this one lives in the pasture and is barefoot, as well?
