    Default Large Pony/small horse blanket?

Hi, I have measured my horse(for blanket) like 3 times and came up with a 62" average. It seems really small. She is probably 14 HH with shoes and VERY short backed.(I have never stuck her yet). I have always had Arabs, but I guess bigger ones.(72, 74, 76. 78, and an 80)! Last one being a Quarab.

So anyone with experience with Large Pony/Small horses Please chime in.

    thx,

    Karen

Schneiders has some good blankets for the smaller sized equine. My old pony was 12.1 hh and wore a 64. I bought their Viking Junior blanket and was very happy with it. Stayed nice and toasty and dry, even in our wet weather with fulltime turnout.

Are you looking for information on blankets that fit large ponies/small horses the best?

I don't really understand what information you are trying to get...

I am trying to determine if this measurement is "way off". It seemed so to me. Also, where are good places to get smaller blankets.

My stocky 12.3 pony wears either a 61 or 63 depending on the manufacturer. My 14.1 hand built like a little Thoroughbred pony wears a 66. I would think that the 62 is too little for your 14 h pony.

My 12h Hackney is base-narrow but has a big barrel.
The Smartpak Thinsulate turnout fits him like a glove - size 57.
Really nice blanket and under $150, starts at size 55.

FWIW: I measured pony as a 55, but when it came it was a bit snug.
Smartpak exchanged it for a 57 and did not charge shipping for the return or for the exchange.

You may be alright witha 64. My shortbacked ASBs wear relatively tiny blankets. My 15.2 mare fits in a 68, the 17+ one wears a 72". When the big mare was skinny, she'd fit in a 68"

The little mare was my first horse, I didn't measure for a blanket, and just used the average size range in the catalogs - I got one that was at least 6" too long.

my 14.3 arab X paint (mostly arab) wears a 68" but he is narrow in the shoulder and has a short back. My 15h arab wore a 72/74 (more typical).

In my experience with Arabians, Saddlebreds, and Half-Arabians a 14-14.3 hand horse usually wears anything from a 64-68.

I have never met a purebred Arabian that wore a blanket larger than a 76.

The largest Saddlebred I have known was 18.1 hands and wore an 84.

The blankets I recommend hands down are RaDon http://www.radoninc.com/

Try Schneiders as the other poster said. I've purchased pony size from them with good luck and they may all be on sale this time of year

    My 14.3-ish Arab cross mare (short-backed) wears a 64.

If you're really doubting your measurements, do you have a larger blanket you can throw on her? If she's really a 62, she'd be completely swimming in even a 72; it would at least give you a sanity check that your measurements are probably good.

    to measure correctly
    measure from wither to tail
    chest to tail
    and wither to elbow

and then buy a high neck lined rug

i have had loads of ponies and small horses my current 14.2h is in 5ft 9inces
but will say she is a welsh section D i have had a welsh section c in 5ft 6inces
current section c is in 5ft so is my section b and my two yearlings
    my 15.2h is 5ft 9inces, my 16;2 is 6ft and my big boys 6.3 and 17.3h are in 6ft 6in

My Rocky Mtn Horse is roughly 14.2 and fairly petite for the breed. She wears a 68 and I would say she is comprable in build to my 1/2 arab mare who wore a 68 also. Id guess your estimate is slightly off, but not sure

On the flip side, my short backed 15.1 Morgan gelding wears a 78" to 81". But he's a "wide load" type.
