Default Anyone tow with a 1/2 ton without the HD towing package?

I've always had the heavy duty towing package on my tow vehicles. But now I am looking at used trucks and I found a good deal on a Silverado without the extra stuff. I only plan to use it locally, and most likely only one horse will be going, so under 5000 lbs. Should I keep looking for one with the towing package?

    IMO, yes.

The chances of trashing the transmission even with short local hauls is just too high.

Yes, people tow without the proper equipment all the time ... they just don't do it for very long before they have major equipment failures ... things like transmissions and engines.

Yes, but get a transmission cooler. Doesn't cost much. Even so, I would be concerned if you lived in a very hilly area.

Thanks all!! I do live in a hilly area so I think I will just keep looking for a truck with a HD trailering pkg.
