How do you pronounce 'Mattes'?
I got a beautiful Mattes pad yesterday and was telling a friend about it - when I realized I have only read the brand name, but have never heard how it was pronounced. I asked a few friends and they all pronounced it differently, so I thought I would ask here!

I've always said "mah-TEH". I thought it looked French so I pronounced it like so. I'm really surprised that it's matt-ess.
But again, I was also seriously amused when I heard from a German person how to really pronounce Stubben.

At least you fancied it up a bit! I've always said it like "mats". Typical American going around dumbing the fancy words down

You know those "two dots" over the 'u'? Apparently, that makes the 's' say a 'sch' sound. The 'u' is a short vowel sound, like in the word tub.
Stubben = schtubben
And here we all were saying stoo-bin.

I have always said mats. I'm so uncouth Though I studied enough German in college to remember umlauts
I think I can say it outloud correctly... but I agree, that middle sound is hard to describe in text. And I thought the umlaut controlled what the 's' said, my apologies.
Someone needs to create a website or Youtube channel of people correctly pronouncing all these foreign horse-related words.

Reminds me of the time before Henri diRivel saddles were called "Nice" saddles. I had a customer ask me for a "Neece" saddle. Took me a minute. She said she thought the saddles were French. I said, no they're just NICE saddles.

Grew up with a German that said Shhtooben.
Always heard the pads pronounced as matt-ess.

So to further clarify - is it MATT-ess or matt-ESS?
This is a very useful thread! Thanks OP.
