Default question for the bit gurus

i have started with a new coach this past tues and at the end of the lesson she suggested to me to get a french link snaffle for my 5 yr old youngster.she didn't really explain why she was suggesting that bit.
my horse has a soft mouth and regularly schools in a eggbutt snaffle.
the only difference i see in the french link is its center.lays flat on tongue compared to the nutcracker effect of regular snaffles.
can someone explain this bit to me and the type of horses they are most used on.

    thanx

I have a TB with a mouth "like budda" whose bit has been a fairly thin French Link for going on 11 years. They are a very mild bit, and my horse finally decided to take a nice contact with it. All the other bits tried in varying stages of thick/thin snaffles didn't seem to be what he wanted. Maybe your trainer feels the bit he's in is too much of a mouthful, some eggbutts can be, and might be the case with your guy. It's an easy switch for a lesson if she has one you can borrow. A young girl at a barn I rode with was having some troubles with her OTTB and tried borrowing mine- she feels he's never gone better.
