I love the color and the idea of the shutters. Keep the roof a light color. It is a good contrast to the red.

Well, the new roof is finally on. (See thread where my brother in law falls off the roof when we start reroofing and breaks his hip. Fun times!) I hired a contractor and I couldn't be more please with how it turned out. I do wish the weather vane was more visible.

It has gone from this to this:

Wonderful house, with such neat architectural touches as the tall, narrow windows for a tall, narrow roofline.

Very neat place to call yours.

Ahh...you don't want to see the inside yet. I've barely touched the surface of the inside. Torn down some wallpaper to find that the walls are horizontal dark beadboard in some parts of the house, 10" plank in others. I can't decide whether to paint, cover with drywall, or what. I did tear off about 7 layers of wallpaper in the kitchen and painted a sort of robin's egg blue with white trim. Ripped the bathroom down to the studs and remodeled it. I need the floors sanded and finished. They're maple, I think. I don't have a very good decorating sense.

I've been thinking of mounting an American flag on the porch column. Not very patriotic, but think it would go well with the color.

An American flag would be patriotic, unless you're saying you aren't.

And I think it's lovely...I bet the inside will be just as nice once you figure out what you want to do . I painted about 11 different colors all over the inside of my house when I was trying to figure out colors. On different walls too, to get different light. It was FUN!

    (But I'm glad it's done now, )

I think she means mounting it as opposed to putting it up and taking it down each day. Surely you have heard the bugle song " evening colors" from the military base in the evening.

No, what I was trying to say is that I was thinking of a flag in more decorative terms than patriotic. I'm not opposed to flying colors, although it would be one of those mounted-on-a-stick things. Like this.

I have one of those "on a stick flags".
    Works fine.

My entrance enclosed porch is kind of decorated with that as a motif, if you can say it has one.

I think looking thru the internet may give anyone many ideas, do that before deciding what you want to do and it will be easier, not having to keep changing things around until you find what fits best.

You have a great start there just by that house itself.

StG, the house is looking awesome! Great job!

Now you can tackle the interior, LOL! But good for you for getting the exterior done first, that has to handle the elements and the interior is okay waiting.

Take before and after photos of the interior too!

The flag will be a beautiful addition to your exterior! Beautiful job! I love it! Good luck with the interior renovations!

absolutely beautiful, it's just as pretty as can be.
we are pretty familiar with metal roofs and my favorite is the dark grey. it goes with everything and I think is classy as heck.
and your relationship with the former owners is really sweet, you must be a very nice person to have that.

StG, beautiful work. I know exactly the scope of the task you face, having spent the last 14 years renovating our old place. Good luck and god speed, my friend. No, seriously it's the most rewarding thing, to transform these old homes back into the beauties they once were. We started on the inside, mainly because it was almost unlivable. So progress was invisible to the outside world-- neighbors were probably like "Are they EVER going to fix this place up??"
When we finally did the whole exterior (new metal roof, new siding, new porch) it was like putting the ribbon on the package, we felt so happy.
This renovation album is just a taste of what you're in for: Are you brave?

Your house is lovely, when you get prices on a new roof also get a price for scraping the old aluminum roof. It can be quite a chunk of money.
