Well...we went to Guelph, they ultrasounded her (both kinds) and managed to see one foal. They didn't rule out twins because of her size, but were pretty confident there was just one in there. They also said she did not have hydrops (they actually just had a mare in the clinic with it the day before!) so that was a HUGE sigh of relief!! They were not sure with the placentitis as they had a hard time getting a good measurement/feel of it because of the way the foal was laying. So, she is staying the night there so they can do more ultrasounds in the morning to see if they have "missed" anything and to try to get more pieces of the puzzle. Also, they will be monitoring her to see if they can have any clues as to her massive belly and weird stance (especially after urinating/passing manure)

SO, there is a glimmer of hope I am so afraid to get excited about!! I will let you know what they find in the morning. Fingers crossed it will be something that can be treated!! What a roller coaster of emotions these past few weeks...really looking forward to a good night sleep knowing she is in great hands!!

Well, that is semi good news. Better than some of the other options. Please post an update after they check her again tomorrow. Along with being truly concerned for your mare and foal, I think many of us breeders are interested from a learning point.

So glad you were able to get her to Guelph today - I would sure bet you are relieved. I don't know that I would have the fortitude to be in the breeding business....though your posts have seemed calm and in control, I'm betting you have been all over the emotional map! I am so happy that you brought her to the clinic. It sounds like your other vet was so far off base it is unbelieveable. To do no diagnostics whatsoever, and tell a mare owner that her mare is aborting is really bad.

Did Guelph have an answer as to her bagging up? It sure sounds like it could be placentitis. Did they start her on antibiotics, Regumate and Banamine for a presumptive diagnosis of placentitis? How did her cervix look?

I'm sorry for all the questions. I am very interested in this as I nursed a 20 year old mare though five months of placentitis and got a healthy, full term filly. I hope you can do the same.
