Can some of you chime in and tell me what your vet is recommending for Adequan as far as dosage. Some are saying Loading dose only and then again in 6 months or so. some are saying loading dose only and the once a month. . .

I just had a vet tell me that the loading dose and then once a month is old school and most recommend just the loading dose.

So,say you??????

Yes- loading dose only every 6 months or 12 months. My vet stopped recommending the monthly dose a year or two ago.

The lameness vet I worked for this summer only uses a loading dose. He says giving it other ways (one vial once a month, every 2 weeks, etc) is a waste of money.

This is what a friend of mine's vet recommends, however my vet is still saying to also do the once a month after the loading dose. It seems most vets are recommending just the loading dose, then every 6 months or so. Loading dose then every 6 months is less expensive and according to most vets has the same effectiveness.

I didn't even know some recommended repeating the loading dose. My vet says loading dose then single dose every month- did not specify when (if ever) the loading dose should be given again. I will make sure to ask about this! (What's another 300 or so dollars at this point...)

My vets are also saying loading dose by instructions, once or twice a year depending on the activity and comfort of the horse.

Not to be dense, but what is"Half-life" and are you saying your vet recommends a weekly shot after the LD? This I haven't heard.

A half life is the length of time it takes for a given thing to reduce to half it's effectiveness/size/strength/etc.

I did the loading dose and have been doing a vial once a month for my horse.

Just FYI 2 pretty big clinics in the area are recommending loading dose and no monthly shots, repeat loading dose in 4 to 6 months. One other clinic is still going with the loading dose then a monthly shot.

Loading dose. Repeat the loading dose when necessary. Monthly injections were never on label, and apparently more beneficial for the joints to receive a subsequent series of 4 to 7 injections with a few days inbetween each one, than a single injection monthly.

Either way you pick, you arent going to harm your horse. Its just the maximum benefits you want, and the company is saying these results are achieved with the loading dose protocol.

They did and that's why we have 2 opinions. Then why do some vets still do the monthy? Because that's what they do.

I cant' find it for the life of me All I can tell you is that I personally spoke to a large equine clinic a few days ago and the vet said they don't do the monthly shots anymore, its sort of old school. The label says 1 vial every 4 days (7 vials) period. However I have spoken to vet(s) that said they do once a month after that. There just seems to be 2 different camps and I'm not sure why. Most vets are now doing the LD and then 6 months or so after.

Sorry this has caused any confusion, I was just wondering what everyone's vets were doing. . .sort of a poll if you will. For fun you could call your vet and see what they say????

I didn't think the monthly HAD been tested... but it has been something a lot of vets did for a long time so there some anecdotal experience for it?!
