I rode last night using a headlamp for the first time. It is an LED Lenser which takes 3 AAA batteries, has a variable output intensity as well as focusable beam. The headband does fit around my schooling helmet. I like the fact that I can set a low output light for use around the horses without blinding them, but can increase the light output when wanted.
I rode with a high output setting but with focus set to wide beam.
I rode in an area which I typically ride in doing flat work. It was a bit of an adjustment but not bad. I'll definitely do it again. Better than not riding!
I have been hanging out in the round pen with my new horse (happy! happy!). I bought a cheap ($35), night vision headlamp at Dick's sporting goods. It is very helpful for seeing things I set down in the dark, miscellaneous barn chores, and watching where I'm going. I even saw a skunk! I'm not sure if it's enough to ride by. Even if not, I like it for now. I may buy a higher powered one later.
