    Default Happy Samhain!

For those who celebrate the last of the harvest festivals, happy samhain!! May the ancestors bless you through the thin veil of the season.

Thank you, thank you. I love this day and this time of year. Thinking kind thoughts of all the loved ones gone before and will light a candle for them all tonight.

No thin veil to our seasons, more like hitting us over the head with their idiosyncratic characteristics.
in our region, there is no mistaking they arrived.

Wonderful that we have such changes, no one is complaining here.

Happy change of season to you too.

Bluey, the "thin veil" refers to the veil between the worlds... to the ancestors that have gone before. Many believe this to be the most powerful time to reach out or to hear what the ancestors are trying to tell us ... even moreso this year with the full moon.

Oh, we are talking religion here.

Can be. Can just be the changing of the seasons... depends on how you look at it. Samhain is the last of the harvest festivals (Lughnasa and Mabon being the others on August 1st and Sept 15 respectively) so it is a seasonal thing regardless of religion. The ancestors, the turning of the wheel, can all be religious if you so desire. I guess when it comes to today, I subscribe to all kinds of thoughts... the above as well as the whole Halloween idea... especially the part where I get to wear a silly costume to work! (out of 50 people in the office, I think a grand total of 2 of us are dressed up).

    More than shadows here tonight
    Flicker in the firelight
More than echoes in the wind
More than breezes touch our skin

Draw them here across the Veil
Sing their praise and tell their tale
See the faces in the flames
Hear the voices, call the names

    Pour libations to the ground
Fill the night with joyous sound
    Stand before the fire bright
Hail the Dead this Samhain night

Pass the horn and sing the praise
Of those who walked in older days
    Stand before the fire bright
Hail the Dead this Samhain night

    Hail the Ancestors with me
    Hail the Friends and Family
Hail the Spirits, Hail the Souls
Hail the night that makes us whole

They live in more than memory
The Veil so thin that we can see
The friends and loves that we long for
Are waiting on the other shore

    Remember why we gather here
At the closing of the year
    Stand before the fire bright
Hail the Dead this Samhain night

(excerpted from Samhain Night by Irene Jericho)

Instead of dressing up I use this as a reflective day to think about those on the other side of the veil. Blessed Be to all those honoring Samhain today too.

I was at a funeral this morning. It seemed somehow apt to have it today.

Christians do kind things because they think it might get them into heaven.
Atheists do kind things because they're nice.

In fact, because Wicca is a religion that does believe in diety, I'd argue that no Wiccan is an aethist.

    My bad.
I did not in any way mean to suggest wiccans/etc. don't believe in a higher power.
It was just a funny quote I saw recently.
    Sorry!
