Nope. I close them and they still "follow" me. I don't ALWAYS have them on every page, but at least once every day or two I will get them "chasing" me on every single page I open.
I always cease browsing/interacting on COTH at that point.

Ok seriously. I guess the more obvious close button is an improvement, but this is getting ridiculous. Every single page. I repeat, Seriously?!!!! I'm starting to wish there was another horse forum out there, but all the other good ones seem to have evaporated.

Y'all know that you can use Firefox and AdBlock Plus and never see any of this, right? I understand why you might not want to change browsers long term--you shouldn't have to!--but for now, while the powers that be at COTH are working all of this out? Well, it seems easier than all the frustration you're facing with these ads...

The visibility of the close button isn't the problem. I can see the close button. But on my phone, the ad itself (which consumes nearly the entire screen of my Razr Maxx) is unclickable. Whenever I click on the close button, it is inactive, and instead I end up opening whatever ad is underneath it on the sidebar. The only way I can get rid of the ad is to close out COTH entirely, and at that point, I'm generally too irritated to even come back.
I guess the silver lining is that some of the sidebar ads are getting additional clicks from me.

Oneonone, what browser are you using on your phone? I have not spent a TON of time browsing the boards from my phone, but I have not see the pop ups at all when using the Dolphin browser.

Maybe because they didn't have enough advertisers?

Wanted to say my thanks for the bigger close button at any rate. It's big enough I don't have to scroll around to use it.
And I have to use it a lot. Every page. Always Dodge now. Haven't seen a wild wings or whatever the third one was in weeks. I'm on a mac using Safari (not sure what version) or the newest version of Chrome. Same results.
Thanks for working on it mods. I appreciate it.

If I weren't already a Ford girl, I most certainly would be now.
I get the Dodge ad one every single page. Nothing else repeats as much as this does.
Again, most up to date Firefox. And again, I don't think this has anything to do with the ads...
ETA: I clicked on this to say that I'm now leaving the forums to "surf" other websites because I can no longer tolerate the Dodge ads on every page. As I clicked on the Help forum, my browser froze for about 15 seconds due to the banners. Another reason to leave.

The more obvious close button is a help (though perhaps not to someone with red-green colorblindness). It does seem to follow me from page to page, sort of like the judge who seems to hate you and your horse following you from ring to ring at a multi-ring show.

Check your setting for pop up ads. Change to block pop-up from the CoTH. So far I have not had any for 2 days, touch wood, and I'm on dail up.

For the first time in several weeks, I have just signed onto the forum with a real computer. I have gotten the pop up on EVERY page I've clicked to since I signed on. Eight pages in a row, including this one. Mostly the Pure Michigan ad, but the Dodge ad a couple of times. I'm on Firefox 16.0.1, running Windows 7.
Simkie, on my phone, I'm just using the default Android browser. Maybe I will look into a different browser.

Oneonone, since you're already using Firefox, just go download the Adblock Plus Add-on. I linked it earlier. Problem solved.

LOL I wish I'd get an ad for Michigan. All I ever get are dodge and tractors.
Neither of which do I want or need.
I do want to see the side ads, though, so not using a blocker.
I hope the Chronicle ad dept rethinks this after this ad run is up.

Well....adblocker is easily enabled and disabled. Perhaps a nice middle ground for those of you who like to see the side bar ads is to enable adblocker through the run of the annoying Dodge/tractor/whatever ad, and then disabling once the run is up?

The problem I see with this, besides not wanting to run the program, period, is that I'm not sure anyone will bother to attempt changes if we all run a blocker and stop reporting the issues.

My guess is that the powers that be at COTH would FAR, FAR rather address this issue and not have people running ad blockers than not address the issue and have people use ad blockers. Their revenue that supports this site comes off of the ads. I run an ad blocker, never see the ads, and therefore never click through. So COTH gets zero advertising revenue off of me.
I suspect that the feedback has been heard loud and clear and they are working on addressing the issue. Perhaps nothing can be done with this advertising run--after all, contracts have been signed and the ink has dried--but I can't imagine they'll sign up for this sort of ad again.
And, if they do, despite all the terrible feedback (and especially the feedback from those of you who WANT to see the other ads, and do click through, but can't stand the pop up thing at the bottom) perhaps users installing blocking software is the least of their worries.

Oh, I'm sure they don't want us installing ad blockers. Or maybe they don't care, who knows. I do know that user feedback is the only hope we might have in getting rid of these ads.
I just plain don't want to install a new ad on, so at this point, I won't. I end up just leaving when it gets bad, and I'm sure they don't care about one person leaving... But hopefully if everyone is vocal, we'll end up with a mutually beneficial solution.

For what it's worth, here's my two cents.
These pop up ads are extremely annoying. The result is that I am spending less and less time on the Chronicle of the Horse site. If that's the result you want, then you have been successful.

I agree. Seems very counterproductive (and downright stupid) to me that companies use such annoying advertising methods as I have yet to find anyone who isn't turned off by them. Yeah, like that's going to increase sales.
Furthermore, if I were a COTH advertiser with the less-invasive sidebar ads, I'd not be pleased that other advertisers are now driving away potential patronage to my own company from forum users.
Seriously, the ONLY answer I see is to get rid of those creeping bottom ads.
