Glad she is on the mend!
I had an old gelding choke and it was a very scary experience. He developed almost instant pneumonia and the second vet I had out felt the first vet was wrong in not giving him a preventative antibiotic injection. Second vet gave some injections and provided me with an injectable antibiotic (not an oral... seems odd than an oral antibiotic would be given for a horse that has just choked... makes sense they wouldn't want to eat for awhile). He completely recovered.

We left VT at 5:30 yesterday and I haven't heard anything yet, but no news is good news at this point.
I'm confused...VA Tech but you're in Vermont?

Oh, no! I didn't realize that would be confusing! We left VT (meaning, VA Tech) and returned home to NC.

Dumb question but was the pneumonia related to the choke or the choke related to the pneumonia or were they separate events? TIA

More jingles from NC, and my 29 year old thinks that she might be a "cute young thing" in his books and will also oblige with a 8x10 glossy to go with 2Dogs. We could put in a digital picture frame and roll by some eye candy for her as she recovers.

A lot of times, when tubing is required to clear a choke a horse will aspirate fluid/feed into their lungs and develop a respiratory infection/pneumonia. Some vets recommend antibiotic injections as a preventative measure.

I had a rotten string of chokes with Purina Equine Senior, so have since switched my old girl to Buckeye Cadence Ultra. Also every meal she gets is watered down to soup consistency and that has seemed to help quite a bit. You may want to think of doing that with your girl from now on. Good luck!
This. My old guy is prone to choke too probably because he's missing teeth. He gets a "smoothie" of senior feed, chopped alfalfa and beet pulp twice a day.
Ingles for your mare.

Flip a coin. It's not what side lands that matters, but what side you were hoping for when the coin was still in the air.
You call it boxed wine. I call it carboardeaux.

BTW:
My 18yo WB says 19 is not that old & if she'd like an 8X10 to hang in her stall as she recovers, he'll try to oblige

I'm sure she would be forever grateful for some eye candy in her stall as she recovers. She does have geldings on either side of them, but they are CLEARLY not up to her standard.

Most likely it was aspiration pneumonia caused from inhaling matter from her esophagus into her lungs. Hopefully not the other way around. I'd imagine that would be a whole 'nother problem to contend with!

By the time I got home after the initial choke, it was dry. However, after being blasted in the face several times with the coughing mare's goop, I opted for another shower before climbing back in bed. I still couldn't find my brush. When I got up at 1:30 my hair was of course still wet. And unbrushed. Unfortunately I am not one of those ravishing beauties who can just roll out of bed and look like I meant for it to be bed head. Although, I was doing a GREAT impersonation of Charlize Theron.................. in "Monster".
No new updates as of now...and no news is supposed to be good news. So fingers are still crossed!
