Hunter fashionistas: Coat colors for navy/midnight CO AYR8?
The last time I rode in the hunters & eq, everyone wore black velvet helmets/hats, period. So it wasn't hard to pair a coat with a hat, because all hats were black velvet.
I currently have a navy(midnight) Charles Owen AYR8. If I'm going to do a hunter show, what color coats would be acceptable with that helmet? Obviously some sort of navy would work. What about dark grays? Any subtle stripe colors to avoid? Anything else that I could get away with? Will the answer be different for eq vs hunters?

Hunters you can get away with almost any color as long as it's not way out there, in eq you want to stick with navy or black.

A black coat would be acceptable with my blue helmet?

I think she just meant that black or blue coats for the Eq ring are the best choices in general.
I was trying to imagine a midnight AYR8 with a black coat and I'm not certain I see it anyhow... I'd just match a navy coat as close as possible to my helmet.
Though I think everyone still sticks to black helmets in the Eq ring, at least around me anyway. We aren't too daring in our wardrobes

I'd go with a midnight blue thats close, with maybe a black pinstripe or windowpane. Lots of shirt choices with respect to colour with that.

I think that with a navy helmet you want to stick to mostly navy coats. Black helmets can be worn with any coat, but other colors can be trickier. I'd have to see a grey coat with the helmet, maybe a dark charcoal would work, but I wouldn't wear a black coat, brown coat, or a light color with it. But it would look great with a navy coat, very sharp!

Thanks for the input, everyone! I've got the white snap/wrap collar shirt ready to go too! I'm just dabbling but it should be fun!

Take a look at the "new" black coats though.
They have subtle accent colors woven in, like blue. Makes it alot softer and matchy matchy with a dark blue helmet. I would not overdo that with a blue shirt though-a pale pastel would be nice...white for a Medal or serious age group Eq at a big rated of course.
That said...if you are just showing lower heights and/or locals and using one outfit for the whole day? Long as it's not way out there, there is a little more leeway, especially with a tasteful pale pastel shirt with a tone on tone pattern.
When opportunity knocks it's wearing overalls and looks like work.

I know tailored sportsman has a black coat with a subtle dark royal/brightish navy window pane pattern... beautiful fabric, would look really nice with the navy helmet, still subtle enough for eq.
I like mares. They remind me of myself: stubborn know it alls who only acknowledge you if you have food.
