Vet recommended surgery for a pony that has been head shaking for over a year due to some allergies. Apparently she has some fluid in her throat that has a "sneeze like" tickle...Something about cutting the "trilingual" nerve ??... sorry but someone else has her and this is 2nd hand. Anyone else had this experience or is it successful? Haven't tried hay steamer yet but heard great stories and wonder if it would work??
There are a lot more conservative management measures for headshaking that I would look into before surgery. If the cause of the headshaking is truly allergy related, lifestyle and dietary management plus antihistamines and diagnostic nerve blocks would be worth trying before surgery. Depending on the cause of the headshaking, some headshakers also respond to a nose net or to avoiding bright sunlight.
Searching for headshaking and the term "trigeminal nerve" might be more helpful. But avoid Google--go with scholar.google or something more reputable than a generic search engine--there's a lot of wacky info out there!
