The cutoff is proportional, so it depends on how many total show in all the regionals. Then they must do something like divide that into 150 and take the resulting fraction and multiply it by the number of people who compete in each regional. Not sure what they do about rounding since you can't sent a fraction of a person... Also not sure what happens if someone decided not to go--if s/he is replaced by the next person in the region or if there is a national waiting list.

Rules here: http://www.alltechnationalhorseshow....egulations.pdf which say that the total number will be specified in the premium.

Premium here, which specifies 150: http://www.alltechnationalhorseshow....PROOF-2012.pdf

I think it was something like 60% last year. More than half but less than three-fourths.

In the Region 8 (West Coast) class they announced the top 25 riders giving many the impression that they had made it. There were only 34 in the class. 25/34 = 73.5 which would seem like a really high amount to move on to the finals.

I wondered about this too. I don't think they truly know until after all the regionals have been held. And, even after that, some people may decline. I have a friend who got to go at pretty much the last minute when someone decided not to go. Which meant that the leased horse she ended up with was, shall we say, interesting. They arrived only to be told by the grooms that he didn't like to jump without his hat.

About as well as you'd expect. The grooms also told them that the horse didn't like solid fences and that was one of the years with the solid hedge-looking thing. Not sure what this horse's milieu was supposed to be.

She stopped out. Didn't even get half way around. And resolved to come back the next year with her own horse. Her mother described it as a valuable and expensive experience.

So that makes 170? Plus any people that don't yet appear as added to the region 3 & 4 classes (IIRC the total on horseshowtime for our region was 20-something a few days before the class, and 34 ended up showing). Plus what I assume are the two biggest regions.

Given that the riders have to declare an intent to do regionals (right?), someone out there should have pretty good idea of what the total number will be. Maybe not someone on the COTH BB. But someone.

Region 5 is definitely sending the Top 10, with #11 announced as an alternate. I would assume she'll head to KY also in case someone drops out. I know I would!

Congrats to the mom of #8 here, I'm glad I was able to give you a recap!

I was told 40% or 8 from Region 7. They handed out 9 ribbons. Guessing that means 8 plus an alternate.

Thank you. This is her first and last year to qualify and compete in the Maclay. She rides with Micaela Kennedy in Chesterfield, MO.

Just seems to be a complicated way of doing things.

Make it easy and take the top # (fill in the blank) from each zone. I like the # 12 as that is the cutoff for most classics. Makes it consistent.

and why are the regions a different number then the zones. Again-confusing.

While I agree that would be the easiest, it would also seem so unfair for the kids who compete in bigger regions. I think taking a percentage levels out the playing field, otherwise you can have 12 out of 20 kid from Colorado going (and possibly risk taking kids who had bad or unsafe rounds) and 12 kids out of 60 from Connecticut (where you might be leaving out some kids who really had the talent they just made minor mistakes).

Zone X is California and Nevada. Zone XI is Hawaii and Zone XII is Alaska. Maclay Region 7 Northwest includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. Maclay Region 8 West is California, Nevada and Hawaii. Not sure if there has ever been a qualified entry from Hawaii or Alaska.

Which is exactly why it was changed from taking a set number. Used to be that Northeast Regionals (Zones I & II) took 50. I can't remember the numbers from the other regions.
Life would be infinitely better if pinatas suddenly appeared throughout the day.

Oh I see. Roman numerals... woah I feel dumb. I kept thinking why is it that there's like zone 1 and 2 and 4 etc, and then just zone X?
