I also saw a great film yesterday called The Intouchables. I will admit that I wasn't super excited to see it based on the description, but it's very funny and poignant without being sappy.<---My mother was right about that one *sigh*

I saw the Intouchables with my SO in the theater and we both really enjoyed it (also on my Moms recommendation)

Not necessarily a small film but my favorite movie of all time is The Count of Monte Cristo with Jim Caviezel

Also Everything Is Illuminated I thought was really excellent and touching

The Spanish Prisioner - Campbell Scott & Steve Martin - very good movie, not about Spain or a prison movie

The Girl with the Pearl Earring - Scarlett Johannsen & Colin Firth

Grand Canyon - Keving Kline, Danny Glover, Steve Martin, Alfre Woodard, Mary Louse Parker, and more - great movie about how small we are compared to the Grand Canyon.

Chocolat - Juliette Binoch (sp?) and Johnny Depp at his most delectable - need I say more?

Also loved The Station Agent and Muriel's Wedding.

What ever happened to Tom Courtenay?

I'm not sure what has happened to Tom Courtenay, but here is a sidebar.
As a young girl I had a huge crush on him from his part in Dr Zhivago...move ahead a number of years and I was living in the UK and working in a theatre there.
Tom Courtenay was one of the actors, and well, I didn't have a crush any more.

It's the one directed by Alfonso Cuaron. It has a very similar feel to The Secret Garden and Black Beauty.

I loved the Spanish Prisoner. Has anyone here seen Return of the Seacaucus Seven? REALLY good movie. Sort of like the Big Chill without the stars.
I don't like Johnny Depp-too wierd, but I did like chocolat. Music was the best part.
I still love Claire's knee, and all of Erich Rohmer's movies.
And did anyone else love Life is Beautiful?

Now this is certainly not a small movie, but I don't know how it has worn, and if some of you youngsters haven't seen it, but Fiddler on the Roof was on yesterday, and I watched the first half. GREAT music. GREAT dancing. The Cossacks at the bar, and the 'bottle dancers' at the wedding! wow! Funny thing about that movie and Romeo and Juliet. I was, ahem, much younger when they were released. With R& J, I was about 14. I was reading it in English, and could recite most of it by heart. When I got older, I could see the parents point of view. Same with Fiddler. I was irreligous at the time, so of course, I saw the parents as old fogies. When I watch it now with strong faith, I wonder what I would do if my child wanted to marry out of my faith.

I mean seriously creepy. But excellent. I watched it probably 2 years ago, and sometimes it still sneaks up on me and creeps me out.

GREAT movie.
Another one we talk about a lot when it comes to horse movies, but it is kind of rare. I don't have netflix, so it might be there, but Champions. What a movie!
I especially remember when they are in the race, and they show his peeps at home watching the race, the little girl with the gorgeous cat on her lap-cat was a dead ringer for my wonderful Malarkey.

That's the thing about a great actor: they can make you fall in love with them as a character, not so much as a person. What woman could not fall for Olivier in Wuthering Heights and yet he was pretty much gay.
